When I was a child I found it fascinating to watch Si Fi movies where characters were able to teleport or at least see each other through something that resembled an intercom. It seemed such a time saver to be able to see other people without travelling for hours or days just to meet someone for a short while. It just made perfect sense to connect people in real time without spending excess time and money.
