An awesome lesson plan for varied grades to help students learn about digital storytelling in developing their own storytelling skills! Related to various SOLs, including 2.12  The student will write stories, letters, and simple explanations. a) Generate ideas before writing. b) Organize writing to include a beginning, middle, and end for narrative and expository writing. c) Expand writing to include descriptive detail.   d) Revise writing for clarity.  

This is a great site with various battles and war generals turned into digital stories. It would better suit upper elementary because of the large amounts of text and potentially difficult-to-interpret graphics.

Storybird - helping students build reading skills and create thier own stories! Related to SOL 2.6 The student will use semantic clues and syntax to expand vocabulary when reading. a) Use information in the story to read words. b) Use knowledge of sentence structure. c) Use knowledge of story structure and sequence. d) Reread and self-correct. 

This is a blog that expands the opportunities for using digital story-telling in the classroom! While it isn't a digital story, it certainly seemed worth the bookmark

Awesome ways to integrate Read Me within sports using Comic Master! Related to SOL (among many others)  5.1 The student will demonstrate proficiency in movement skills and skill combinations in complex movement activities. a) Demonstrate proficiency in locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative skill combinations in more complex environments and modified sports activities. b) Perform educational gymnastic sequences, including travel, roll, balance, and weight transfer, with smooth transitions and changes of direction, shape, speed, and flow. c) Perform different types of rhythm/dance sequences including American and international dances.

Awesome for students to realize the importance of doing their work! Related to SOL 1.5 The student will recall basic addition facts with sums to 18 or less and the corresponding subtraction facts. (and many others)

Wonderful examples of real-life digital storytelling that allows upper-level students to integrate real-life and digital storytelling! Related to various SOLs, including SOL 12.2  The student will examine how values and points of view are included or excluded and how media influences beliefs and behaviors. a) Evaluate sources including advertisements, editorials, blogs, Web sites, and other media for relationships between intent, factual content, and opinion. b) Determine the author's purpose and intended effect on the audience for media messages.

Different digital storytelling format! Wonderful for primary children! Related to a variety of SOLs, including SOL K.3 The student will build oral communication skills. a) Express ideas in complete sentences and express needs through direct requests. b) Begin to initiate conversations. c) Begin to follow implicit rules for conversation, including taking turns and staying on topic. d) Listen and speak in informal conversations with peers and adults.e) Participate in group and partner discussions about various texts and topics. f) Begin to use voice level, phrasing, and intonation appropriate for various language situations. g) Follow one- and two-step directions. h) Begin to ask how and why questions.

Wonderful sample lesson plan for students researching the Indus River Valley Civilization. Related to SOL WHI.3 The student will demonstrate knowledge of ancient river valley civilizations, including those of  Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus River Valley, and China and the civilizations of the Hebrews, Phoenicians, and Nubians, by a) locating these civilizations in time and place; b) describing the development of social, political, and economic patterns, including slavery; c) explaining the development of religious traditions; d) describing the origins, beliefs, traditions, customs, and spread of Judaism; e) explaining the development of language and writing.
