With today's terrorism threat the need for these highly trained dogs is only increasing. It takes two to three months of daily training to ready one of these dogs to competently perform their job. Their reward? A rubber ball or other favorite toy is all they ask for after finding one of the many substances they can be trained to detect. Hundreds of these dogs have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since 9/11 and most of them by private security contractors employed by the government. Whether trained for explosives detection, drugs, or arson work, there hasn't been a more reliable means of detecting illegal or dangerous substances in a shorter amount of time than a well trained dog. http://www.patriotdog.com/government-k9s-bomb-dogs/
