Documentary Film Festival

This is the Review for Urgh! A Music War which is a Punk and New Wave Music documentary.

This is an endearing and sometimes emotional exploration of how one of the worst films in history became a cult classic. Interviews with the director and actors reveal the disparate attitudes they hold towards the film that defined, and often ruined, their careers. George Hardy is a dentist turned actor who revels in his cult status and serves as one of our principal guides, but even he feels a little rebuffed when his role is not always recognized. It is funny, and a little sad, how seriously the Italian director regards his awful film; as the film moves from one actor to the next, bringing us up to date on their lives and careers, it is sometimes difficult to decide whether we should be laughing or crying.

I did not think this movie was going to be very interesting, but we watched it. It was really well done and sucked you in from the get go. 

This was the most suspenseful film I had seen in a long time. Even though the outcome is somewhat given away by the fact that he is interviewed throughout the film, I still couldn't stop watching!

Not sure if this is just an advertisement for the juicer he uses, but I'll watch it!

I watched it this weekend on Netflix. I would recommend it and found the topic really interesting. He didn't push the brand of juicer either which I thought was great!

As I love to play scrabble and just picked up Banangrams! for the students to play during lunch. This movie looks like it is right up my alley. I will have to watch it over winter break. 

This is a really tough documentary to watch, but is well worth it. 

This is a really great documentary about politics I saw a few years ago. You have the young, hard working, idealistic challenger against the corrupt long-time incumbent with a powerful political machine working for him. It is truly eye-opening to see just how corrupt the machine can still be. Although Booker loses this race, we still have a happy ending. Eventually Cory Booker becomes the next mayor of Newark, NJ and they post some of the best crime reduction statistics in the United States. The incumbent, Sharpe James, eventually is found guilty of fraud and sentences to 27 months in prison!

I don't think I have seen that film, but I am familiar with the players. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll try to find it and watch!

This is a review of the documentary Sound and Fury. It documents the struggles of a deaf family when their daughter wants a cochlear implant. This documentary has and will spark lots of debate and emotion.

I agree that it is a very good film about how the deaf community feels about cochlear implants. The follow-up film is also excellent.

Certainly one of the most disturbing documentaries I've seen. Looks at the food industry and what their practices are like, and how these practices affect us as consumers.

This isn't a film I would recommend showing to young children if you want them to continue eating meat. Disturbing scenes of the treatment of animals in factory farms and slaughterhouses.

I found this film to be a game-changer. I tend to made much more careful choices about food than I did before I watched it. Having been an on-again/off-again vegetarian for years, it didn't seal the deal for me in that way, but it definitely made me a more considerate consumer. My father hasn't eaten chicken since he saw the film - and I imagine his reaction is similar to that of young children.

This Ken Burns documentary covers the history of National Parks in America. The imagery is beautiful and after these short six hours you will yearn to travel America.

This movie shares the history of deafness and the Deaf community in America. It offers a view of deafness and Deaf culture that will make you think and understand this disability in a whole new way.

Title's pretty self-explanatory. Designs for electric vehicles have been around for awhile--longer than most people may think. This documentary looks at the history of the electric car and investigates who was responsible for the failure of electric cars: consumers, car companies, big oil?

Mild language, rated PG, but it's probably not going to appeal to most kids under 13 or 14, anyway.

An extensive look at the variety of life and ecosystems of our planet, with stunning photography and some rare footage of animals, including the snow leopard and a pride of lions attacking a grown elephant.

If your children can handle the predator/prey scenes in Nature on PBS, they will love this.

Werner Herzog takes you to Antarctica and introduces you to the residents there. A visual masterpiece that will open your mind to a part of the world most people will never visit.

Errol Morris classic. I love my pets, but some people really, really love their pets. Fascinating!
