Obama calling for more schooling --either more hours or more days. - Lynn Sweet - 0 views

  • economic progress and educational achievement have always gone hand in hand in America.
  • The source of America's prosperity, then, has never been merely how ably we accumulate wealth, but how well we educate our people. This has never been more true than it is today. In a 21st century world where jobs can be shipped wherever there's an internet connection; where a child born in Dallas is competing with children in Delhi; where your best job qualification is not what you do, but what you know - education is no longer just a pathway to opportunity and success, it is a prerequisite.
  • of the thirty fastest growing occupations in America, half require a Bachelor's degree or more. By 2016, four out of every ten new jobs will require at least some advanced education or training.

  • I am calling on a new generation of Americans to step forward and serve our country in our classrooms. If you want to make a difference in the life of our nation; if you want to make the most of your talents and dedication; if you want to make your mark with a legacy that will endure - join the teaching profession. America needs you.
  • Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will use only one test when deciding what ideas to support with your precious tax dollars. It's not whether an idea is liberal or conservative, but whether it works.

  • challenge our states to adopt world-class standards that will bring our curriculums into the 21st century.
  • develop standards and assessments that don't simply measure whether students can fill in a bubble on a test, but whether they possess 21st century skills like problem-solving and critical thinking, entrepreneurship and creativity.

  • third pillar of reform -- recruiting, preparing, and rewarding outstanding teachers.
  • politics and ideology have too often trumped our progress.
  • extra pay to Americans who teach math and science
  • if a teacher is given a chance but still does not improve, there is no excuse for that person to continue teaching
  • fourth part of America's education strategy - promoting innovation and excellence in America's schools.
  • I call on states to reform their charter rules, and lift caps on the number of allowable charter schools,
  • We can no longer afford an academic calendar designed when America was a nation of farmers who needed their children at home plowing the land at the end of each day.
  • expand effective after-school programs
  • rethink the school day to incorporate more time - whether during the summer or through expanded-day programs
  • let us all make turning around our schools our collective responsibility as Americans. That will require new investments in innovative ideas. That is why my budget invests in developing new strategies to make sure at-risk students don't give up on their education; new efforts to give dropouts who want to return to school the help they need to graduate; and new ways to put those young men and women who have left school back on a pathway to graduation.
  • The fifth part of America's education strategy is providing every American with a quality higher education - whether it's college or technical training.
  • simplify federal college assistance forms
  • the goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by the year 2020.
  • Adults of all ages need opportunities to earn new degrees and skills
  • bottom line is that no government policies will make any difference unless we also hold ourselves more accountable as parents.

Moving past the days of the old school yard - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
Society confronts educational change in an odd, entirely counter intuitive manner. On one hand we acknowledge that education can and should do a better job of preparing our children for the future while on the other we cling to the models of education that we knew. This led educational writer Will Richardson to state that 'the biggest barrier to rethinking schooling in response to the changing worldscape is our own experience in schools'. Our understandings of what school should be like and our imaginings of what school could be like are so clouded by this experience that even the best evidence for change is overlooked or mistrusted.

Working Towards Wheelchair Accessible Schools - 0 views

  •
No child left behind. That is the current educational thrust created by Federal Lawin 2001. The question is does it include those bound to wheelchairs? Education for all cannot be guaranteed when the school has no wheelchair access and makingsome schools wheelchair accessible can be an expensive proposition. Wheelchair bound students can receive an education comparable to their peers, however not necessarily in their local school or charter school of their choice.

How Can A Primary School Tutor Assist Your Child? - About Town Tuition | online tuition... - 0 views

  •
Primary School is the foundation of a child's educational life. How is he/she going to perform and what kind of attitude he/she exposes towards receiving education depends completely upon the care and assistance one receives in their primary school level. So, it is the responsibility of every conscious parent to provide their kid with the best care and support during the most formative period of their life. To support them successfully and completely, enrolling them in a primary school is not the only thing you have to do. They need extensive care and only an efficient primary school tutor can create the environment which will enable them to learn, making it an extremely enjoyable act.

Getting Started - 1 to 1 Schools - 13 views

  •
Once schools make the commitment to move to one to one, lots of questions arise about how to make that transformation. Within the past week, I have received multiple emails requesting my recommendations about what steps to take when moving to one to one. First of all, I must say I am extremely excited to receive these requests. Currently, less than ten percent of schools nationwide have one to one, and I think that is a sad statistic. Leaders of one to one schools and those currently making that transition are the trailblazers in education today. Their work has the potential to transform education in a way that hasn't happened in the past 100 years. My recommendations around implementation of one to one focus around two major themes. The first theme is addressing all of the issues that arise with such a major change. The second theme deals with the...

The fact that the best of schools pick up students with best grades and highest test scores is well-known. Students on the other hand, select schools keeping in mind the impressive name printed on a sweatshirt. However, what is important is to figure out which school is right for you.

Questions to ask as we ponder the latest PISA results - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
I am wanting to take a slightly different approach to this weeks post. The past week has seen the latest round of PISA results and the media has had a field day. Headlines have routinely attacked students, educators and education systems in equal measure. The Canberra Times reported that "Australian school scores plummet on world stage", the Sydney Morning Herald led with "Alarm bells': Australian students record worst result in global tests" and The Weekend Australian went with "PISA global educational rankings: Schools fail on maths, science".

Urban high school's rare feat: No dropouts - Education- msnbc.com - 0 views

  • Urban high school's rare feat: No dropoutsCamden, N.J., school built around student's passions, community project
  • The schools are small and very different from traditional schools. MetEast has just over 100 students — less than one-tenth the enrollment at each of the city's comprehensive high schools. The educators are called "advisers," not teachers, and they advise the same group of students all four years.
  • Classes are built around the idea that students will learn by following their passions. Students do internships. Graduation requirements include a senior project with the aim of doing some good for the community. And four times a year, every student makes a presentation to a panel that includes students and adults from outside the school.

  • And unlike charter schools that have sprung up in Camden during the last decade, MetEast is run by the city's school district.
