Free Practice Tests - Varsity Tutors - 44 views

  •
Assessment | News Varsity Tutors Debuts Free Test Question Site By Dian Schaffhauser 11/07/13 Varsity Tutors, a providor of private tutoring to students online, has launched a new, free service with the intention of becoming the "Khan Academy" of practice tests. The company has introduced a Web-based assessment system intended to replace other forms of educational content such as SAT or ACT preparation books or online subscriptions to assessment materials. Varsity Learning Tools, as it's called, makes hundreds of free practice tests available in 95 subjects. Currently in open beta testing, the site lists assessment tests by subject and allows the user to choose to answer a single test, flashcards, or a question of the day. Each question can be shared through social network services. When the student answers it, a second page displays with an assessment and explanation and data on how much time was spent on the question, and how many others answered it correctly." Pearson Taps IBM's Watson as a Virtual Tutor for College Students - Bloomberg - 17 views

  • As an online tutor, Watson, a similar messenger-based tool, promises to help students any time they need it while providing insight to professors about how students are learning, according to the companies. Students will be able to ask questions of the tutor, which is capable of responding with hints, feedback and explanations.
  • “One-on-one tutoring is the Holy Grail of teaching and all educational approaches should be aimed at replicating this model,” Harriet Green, who heads IBM’s Watson Education effort, said in prepared remarks delivered in Las Vegas Tuesday. “Advanced technologies can help us to understand individual interaction patterns and enable us to tailor educational content accordingly.”

What the flip? Exploring technologies to support a flipped classroom by @katessoper - 54 views

  •
A flipped classroom is one where the lectures become the homework and the traditional homework tasks take place in the lesson time. This enables students to attend sessions with an understanding of the subject and to conceptualise and build upon it through doing exercises in class, with you, as the tutor, on hand to answer questions and explore the topic in more detail. This moves the tutor from the "sage on the stage, to the guide on the side" (King, 1993).

Developing first-year engagement with written feedback - 37 views

  •
Assessment feedback continues to be a relatively under-researched area in higher education despite its fundamental role in learning and teaching. This article positions assessment feedback as a complex meaning-making process requiring dialogue and interpretation. The article outlines an evaluative case study investigating a feedback review meeting organized through the personal tutor system. This meeting is designed to support students' engagement with written feedback at their first formal feedback 'moment' when confidence and self-esteem can be at risk. The evaluation of the review meeting suggests students benefit from one conversation about all their written feedback. The article concludes that developing positive learning relationships with personal tutors at the point of assessment feedback can encourage a sense of achievement and success at a time when learners may feel most vulnerable to low self-esteem. In this way, the intervention can be valuable as part of an institution's retention strategy.

Teens Get Math/Science Help at Alleyoop - 94 views

  •
An excellent adaptive learning site that provides online tutoring, interactive tools, and challenges in a fun and engaging way. Students need to use "yoops" (a virtual currency) to progress through activities. This does eventually require students to pay their way through the course as free yoops become increasingly difficult to acquire.. which is the largest drawback.

Free Social Teaching and Learning Network focused solely on education - 58 views

  • Some people describe Sophia as a mash up of Wikipedia, YouTube, and Facebook — focused solely on teaching and learning. It’s where you can teach what you know and learn what you don’t. Whether you’re a high school student, college student, teacher, professor, tutor or parent, Sophia makes knowledge easier to share, easier to find, and easier to organize. And it’s free.

It will be interesting to see how this site develops. I plan to use it to host some learning modules I'm working on.

Sophia hosts free online learning content in multimedia "packets" tied to MN K-12 standards. A blend of Facebook, Wikipedia, Atomic Learning, and Hippocampus.

Utah Charter School & Online High School | Open High School of Utah - 0 views

  •
I have been to a different school nearly every single year of my life trying to find the "perfect" school. OHSU is my perfect school. This is my second year at OHSU and the teachers here are amazing! They call me weekly just to check up on me and offer to tutor me whenever I am struggling. The courses and curriculum are great. It is easy to navigate and understand the material and if I don't understand something, my teachers are only a Skype call away! I also love OHSU because it is very flexible. It makes school a lot easier to do when I can finish my schoolwork on my own time.

Action Research - What and how? by @Clare2ELT - 20 views

  •
Many schemes of professional development for teachers, as well as advanced teaching certificates, include an element of 'Action Research' (AR). In my work as a team leader of EFL tutors, I've come to see just how important AR is for teachers to continue to develop and professionalise their teaching practices. And I'm so enthusiastic about teachers doing research that I want to share some introductory thoughts with a wider audience - with you, my dear blog readers! I hope I can inspire you to start your own AR projects, and would love to hear what you get up to...

The Realities of Artificial Intelligence and Adaptive Learning - 17 views

  •
Excellent article on where we are (could not use diigo highlight)   research suggests that experts literally don't have conscious access to 70% of what they do. In well-defined domains, like mathematics and programming, we've created intelligent tutoring systems that can develop specific outcomes, but even those have problems transferring into practice. Real learning comes from approaching complex problems, experimenting with alternatives, and accessing resources in the process of solving them

Classroom Activity - Choices - 50 views

  •
images can support tutor time, circle time, philosophical thinking, or to prompt a classroom discussion with pupils. The choices within this activity should be challenged by the teacher / group by asking the individuals to justify their decision. Simple questions such as, "Why did you choose that one?"; "How did you come to that decision?"; "What is the first thing you would do if you were granted your choice?"; "How could you make the world a better place with the choice you have decided?"; and so on!
