Photos of mullets, leotards return to haunt online by AP: Yahoo! Tech - 0 views

  • But some people do care, especially when someone else has uploaded an unflattering photo or video. Los Angeles screenwriter Mike Bender, who runs AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com devoted to such photos from the past, said a woman who shared a family photo later wrote to say that she was drunk when she submitted it and that her family was upset with her. Bender removed the picture immediately, but it was already all over the Internet. What happens online can have a direct effect on someone's real life reputation, Van Der Heide said, yet people posting photos of others aren't giving them a chance to respond or control how they appear. He said unwarranted photos, videos or comments made about you could potentially "assassinate your credibility."
  • Today, Rea is a high school math teacher in St. Louis, having given up her modeling dreams. "It's making fun of myself, letting the world know we've all had embarrassing moments," she said. What if her students saw that photo online? "I think it would be funny," she said. "It's good for my students to know that it's OK to make mistakes."

picturing the thirties - 2 views

  •
"Picturing the 1930s," a new educational web site created by the Smithsonian American Art Museum in collaboration with the University of Virginia, allows teachers and students to explore the 1930s through paintings, artist memorabilia, historical documents, newsreels, period photographs, music, and video. Using PrimaryAccess, a web-based teaching tool developed at the university's Curry Center for Technology and Teacher Education, visitors can select images, write text, and record narration in the style of a documentary filmmaker. They can then screen their video in a virtual theater. PrimaryAccess is the first online tool that allows students to combine their own text, historical images from primary sources, and audio narration to create short online documentary films linked to social studies standards of learning, said Glen Bull, co-director of the Curry Center. Since the first version was developed in collaboration with U.Va.'s Center for Digital History and piloted in a local elementary school in 2005, more than 9,000 users worldwide have created more than 20,000 short movies. In creating digital documentaries, students embed facts and events in a narrative context that can enhance their retention and understanding of the material, said Curry research scientist Bill Ferster, who developed the application with Bull. Besides increasing their knowledge about the period, "Picturing the 1930s" enhances students' visual literacy skills, Ferster noted, adding that PrimaryAccess "offers teachers another tool to bring history alive."

TinEye Reverse Image Search - 52 views

  •
TinEye is a "reverse" search engine: you upload an image file, and it finds all the places on the Internet where that same photo (or a lightly altered version) has been found. This can be useful if you are looking for the original version of a picture (rather than someone's repost).

PSA: Don't Let Salami and Google Images Get You In Hot Water -Edublogs - education blog... - 130 views

  • This is a true story.
  • Three years ago, an eleven-year-old blogger here on Edublogs wrote a post about his favorite lunch food – salami.
  • Our Edublogs support team just received a lengthy cease and desist letter from a large law firm that represents the photographer of the salami photo.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • As part of his post, he used Google Images to find a quick photo of salami that he then uploaded to his blog.
  • What does this mean for teachers and students?
  • Using Google Images or copying a photo from most websites is much like plagiarism. Hopefully, by educating each other, we can avoid mistakes like this one and promote fair use of photos and other media on the web.
  •
Shared this with my students and we decided to create a class Diigo library of public domain images to help reduce everyone's legwork. It takes a little while longer to find pictures, but it's worth it.

Behold | - 4 views

About Behold BeholdTM is a search engine for high-quality Flickr images. It aims to answer your queries based on what is inside the images -- at the pixel level. It offers a completely new way to search for images, using techniques of computer vision. It is different to standard image search engines, such as Flickr or Google, because those search through images using only image tags and filenames. Behold looks for high quality images, so you don't have to sift through hundreds of poorly taken pictures to find a good one. Behold uses both aesthetic and technical quality indicators to find some of the best images available online. Behold draws computational power from Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) to handle large volumes of images. Features Behold is capable of recognising a number of visual concepts in pictures. You can ask Behold to return images that look like one of these concepts. This new type of search can be flexibly combined with regular text-based search. For example you can ask Behold to return images tagged with the word 'london' that look like pictures of buildings (try it!). You can also filter text-based image search results based on what the images actually look like. Both of these features are demonstrated in these videos. With a newly introduced feature, Behold goes one step further and automatically suggests visual filters after analysing the words in your query. It shows you what your search results would look like if you apply one of these filters, so you save time on finding the right one.
