Teachers in tertiary education need new strategies to communicate with students of the net generation and to shape enticing educational experiences for them. The use of new approaches such as video-recorded lectures to communicate directly and individually with all students has been the preserve of technology-savvy educators. However, a recent technological advance - the Apple iPad - has the potential to change this situation, offering access to effective and efficient pedagogy in an easy and intuitive way. This paper is a report on the use of the iPad in teaching activities over the past 15 months, showing how it can be used to enhance engagement with learning for tertiary students, both those studying live on campus and those studying at a distance.

I guess you can consider this as spam followed by name calling on a education list serve for professionals. When you actually click on the link you will notice that they are providing a service to low income families who can't afford Internet at their home.

And don't you think that if I recommended a particular internet company to my students that I wouldn't be called-out for endorsing a particular company? I wouldn't regard that as professional at all. In addition, that company is not necessarily a nation-wide provider of cable services. If you are going to post something about how to get low-cost internet, why don't you list it that way instead of calling it "internet essentials" and making it sound like a legitimate educational tool?

The need for classroom technology was so great that 1,000 teachers posted wishes in the first month. With such high demand, we began the process of turning Digital Wish into an official nonprofit organization.

I've started creating a table of important skills, some derived from the Padagogy Wheel, and actions, some derived from iPad As… What I am planning to highlight is that there are many apps that can be use for many purposes and for developing many skills. For example, I have already added "Explain Everything" to 9 categories as I see it as a multifunctional app and one worth its price because of the educational benefits it provides. Over the coming months I plan to add text descriptions to each category to explain how the apps listed address the skill or action they have been linked to and may also link them to other online sources that show them in action. I'll also provide direct links to the App Store, as I always do on this blog when I mention apps so you can check them out yourself if you want. Now this sounds like a big task and it is. So I do need some help. What do I want from you? Anything you can give. Just add them to the comments of this post. Spread the word regularly through Twitter, Facebook, Curation sites like Pinterest and Scoop-It to keep educators coming back.

In these last days of April, I wanted to acknowledge the yin and yang that this month represents for my discipline. April is National Poetry Month, but it is also the time of year when students in grades 3-8 take their ELA and math New York State exams. The irony of this is not lost on us English teachers.

Years ago the Hilton Foundation gave St. Catherine University money to support outreach around the Sisters, broadly construed. Why? Because in their research on ROI, they found that money given to Sisters to do good in the world yielded the largest returns. Sisters have a history of maximizing benefits. In our practice at St. Kate's we, with a faculty of varying faiths and identities, channel the Sisters' practices of hospitality, generosity, the Catholic Intellectual Tradition and treating our dear neighbors as ourselves to serve the greater good in our work with students and the community. Unity around this shared purpose is what makes working and learning here uniquely wonderful. Recent randomized experiments have found that seemingly "small" social-psychological interventions in education-that is, brief exercises that target students' thoughts, feelings, and beliefs in and about school-can lead to large gains in student achievement and sharply reduce achievement gaps even months and years later.

A few months ago I went on a Mental Health First Aid in schools course. We learnt about the stress bucket. So it goes like this. Basically we all have a stress bucket. If it gets too full as the stresses of life flow in to it, it will over fill and over flow and we will begin to feel overwhelmed. Coping strategies are like a tap on the bucket and should be used to allow some of the stress to be released and will prevent us from becoming overwhelmed. If our stress bucket gets too full we can suffer from mental ill health. Some life events such as bereavement, illness etc. can cause our buckets to overflow quite quickly but sometimes small life stressors can build and accumulate also causing our buckets to fill...

It is difficult to have not noticed that the Presidential Election in the United States of America has been somewhat controversial. The same conclusion can be drawn about 'Brexit'. The implications of these events will keep historians, political analysts and indeed educators busy for many years. Regardless of your political leanings there are genuine implications for educators in these events and a considered response now and in the coming months (even years) will be required.
