Our 6th grade collaborative project with a focus on global issues. We are looking for schools to join us with the hopes of working on some collaborative lyrics in Google Docs, remixing audio tracks shared between schools and possibly a skype session. ABCs of collaborative/cooperative learning... and then some.

I live in Australia and I have NO idea what all those lights are in the OUTBACK!! There's more light in just a few spots in the Outback (and there's LOTS of those shown in the image) than in the WHOLE of New Zealand? What gives? Mining? Aliens? A data ERROR? The ABC .net site explains that the lights are bushfires! As the images were taken over a number of months, the fires may not have all been burning at the same time. April (when the images were started) may be a the worst time for fires, however, the Outback is usually dry and fires would occur at any time.

I also live in Australia and have to agree with Colin - why so many lights in the outback? The outback of Australia is very sparsely populated and there are no big cities to generate these sort of lights. Maybe it is the aliens!!!

First in a series of NPR reports on School Makeovers. Transcript and link to audio of broadcast. "If a school is consistently failing and kids aren't learning, shut it down. Start over with new teachers and administrators willing to do something dramatically different. Closing failing schools and turning them around has been in vogue since No Child Left Behind, and now the Obama Administration is embracing the idea. It's even offering millions of dollars to school districts to help them do it."

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Internet-Using Educators A book written by Stephen R. Covey titled, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and a 1998 FETC conference presentation based on the book by Dr. Donna Baumbaugh (University of Central Florida), "The ABCs from the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Educators", inspired me to consider taking the basic ideas put forth and applying them to some strategies which educators might use as they are trying to incorporate the use of the internet into their curriculum. I will try to briefly outline the essence of the 7 habits and include some strategies for achieving effective internet use in your classroom.
