"Countries with greater gender equality see a smaller proportion of women taking degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), a new study has found. Policymakers could use the findings to reconsider initiatives to increase women's participation in STEM, say the researchers. Dubbed the 'gender equality paradox', the research found that countries such as Albania and Algeria have a greater percentage of women amongst their STEM graduates than countries lauded for their high levels of gender equality, such as Finland, Norway or Sweden."

Great resource for STEM topics that are up to date, short, contain data and information. Highly suggested for mathematics and science teachers.

Interesting. Would an analogous research conducted on boys shows a preference for disciplines predominantly associated with girls?

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching are the Nation's highest honors for teachers of mathematics and science.

MIT recently announced a new STEM resource for high schools called BLOSSOMS. It contains online video lessons and free resources for teachers and students. There are also links to other STEM resources on the site

All the digital materials needed to teach over twenty courses in Mathematics and Science are available for the free use by any student or teacher. These courses are part of the Progressive Mathematics Initiative (PMI) and Progressive Science Initiative (PSI).

Watching video from the Apollo space programme one can't help but notice how things have changed since those days in the early 1970s. Banks of small round rectangular screens, dot matrix printers, a myriad of switches and dials each with a specific task to perform and a design aesthetic that says functionality in mild mannered green. What is missing beside the sort of computing power we carry in our pockets today are women. In the 70s science and engineering was what men did and from a quick look at the statistics there continues to be much room for change.
