  • The reality is that I no longer need to send my children to a school to learn algebra, U.S. history, or French.
  • That doesn't mean that we throw all information and knowledge out of the curriculum. No question, all kids need to be able to read and write effectively, understand enough math to function in their daily lives, and have a basic understanding of science, history, and more. But we must be willing to consider that in a world full of access to knowledge and information, it may be more important to develop students who can take advantage of that knowledge when they need it than to develop students who memorize a slice of information that schools offer in case they might need it someday
  • But giving students devices and access is only a small part of the equation

Delivering quality education is more than about lowering costs. Any teacher that can be entirely replaced by a video or a computer, probably should be.

"Many media have finally recognized the education bubble and the potential that it may hurt our economy more than the housing bubble. However, two experts in the field of education know this and are trying to change the way we see education - Dr. Raymund Paredes and Salman Khan."

Khan Academy: It's Different This Time « Mathalicious - 4 views

  • This works well when you want a new way to distribute coupons, but it’s problematic when we try to impose technological solutions on problems that aren’t technological in nature.
  • For all the talk about turning students into creative problem solvers and 21st century critical thinkers, the truth is that our current system still very much revolves around the institutionalized mediocrity of standardized testing.
  • We can talk all we want about moving beyond testing, but it’s still the only thing that people are immediately incentivized to care about.

THIS is why I have struggled over the years to learn abstract programming languages like C, in a nutshell. Textbooks make exactly the same mistakes. A great visual representation that I'm going to share with anyone who asks me how to teach programming.

Assessment | News Varsity Tutors Debuts Free Test Question Site By Dian Schaffhauser 11/07/13 Varsity Tutors, a providor of private tutoring to students online, has launched a new, free service with the intention of becoming the "Khan Academy" of practice tests. The company has introduced a Web-based assessment system intended to replace other forms of educational content such as SAT or ACT preparation books or online subscriptions to assessment materials. Varsity Learning Tools, as it's called, makes hundreds of free practice tests available in 95 subjects. Currently in open beta testing, the site lists assessment tests by subject and allows the user to choose to answer a single test, flashcards, or a question of the day. Each question can be shared through social network services. When the student answers it, a second page displays with an assessment and explanation and data on how much time was spent on the question, and how many others answered it correctly." See comment #1 by Will Richardson. Need to be so careful when glorifying what on the surface may appear transformational, while under the shiny wrapper it is nothing all that new. These new forms of just in time information delivery are great student supports; no more.
