    Anyone know of a presentation like this aimed at secondary education? As a teacher I think about the same issue - get a point - all the time. Power Point can, unfortunatly, become a useless and boring mess of stolen text and fancy slide transitions. I could see using this in an educational setting even though the aim feels business related.

    Finland recently made the news for its decision to shift away from a focus on handwriting. Beginning in 2016 students will not be required tl learn cursive handwriting and instead will be taught typing skills. If this was anywhere other tan Finland the decision might be ignored or ridiculed but the Finnish Education systems reputation for producing quality learning backed by innovative practice makes this hard to ignore.

    Constructivism is one of those ideas we throw around in educational circles without stopping to think about what we mean by it. They are the terms that have multiple meanings, are at once highly technical and common usage and are likely to cause debate and disagreements. Constructivism in particular carries a quantity of baggage with it. It is a term that is appropriated by supporters of educational approaches that are in stark contrast to the opposing view; constructivism vs didactic methods or direct instruction. The question is what are the origins of constructivism and does a belief in this as an approach to understanding learning necessitate an abandonment of direct instruction or is this a false dichotomy?

  • Mazur believes the purpose of education is changing. It used to be about mastering a certain amount of knowledge. But knowledge is growing and changing at such a rapid rate that it's impossible to learn it all. The key now is to find and use information, not remember and repeat it. And Mazur says the goal of educators should be to help students develop the skills to understand all the new information that will be coming at them throughout their lives. In other words, the purpose of education now should be to learn how to learn.
