'If you are trying to connect with the public, where you go online matters. If you choose to make Facebook your platform for civic activity, you are implicitly suggesting that a specific class of people is more worth your time and attention than others. Of course, splitting your attention can also be costly and doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be reaching everyone anyhow. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't. The key to developing a social media strategy is to understand who you're reaching and who you're not and make certain that your perspective is accounting for said choices. Understand your biases and work to counter them.'
HMRC getting some shiznit for taking to Twitter for customer service but I think it is fantastic. Used the service myself Friday and was impressed. I could tell they were struggling with demand but did a great job.
Really excited about this. The man in charge of re-developing Edinburgh city centre hooks up with The Broughton Spurtle to open up discussion about the trials going on at George Street and upcoming work at St James. Although a lengthy article, not much bullshit here and a very open willingness to keep the discussion going.
Advice from Comms at Cornwall Council about good use of YouTube. Ofcom: YouTube is the UK's most popular social media site and the second largest search engine after Google.
Social media and gov predictions from Oxford Internet Institute include:
'Government will abandon surveys in favour of social media monitoring and engagement'
'99% of gov.uk petitions fail to get 10,000 signatures. This is the number needed for the petition to be eligible to be debated in House of Commons...So although the internet gives us tools to help mobilise a community around an issue, it doesn't necessarily make it easy.'
There's something in this for us in the Digital Engagement Team...can't put my finger on it. Like, how could this approach be modified and applied appropriately to some of the things we're looking at? Left field?
Shared by Gillian Fisher. I'll get in touch with Kate to find out more about what their training looks like and to share what we're thinking of over here. Anyone else thinking the same as me or already made contact?
'This official Instagram account is produced by Local Government and Regeneration Committee clerks to provide information on the Committee's work'. Hmmmmm.....
Keeping this as it's a popular idea with the Education lot for Engage. If we do something similar on the new/updated site, it could be an exemplar? Does Delib have something similar to offer?
