Project idea for an 8th grade math class centered around games and probability

Our Mathematical Adventure Inspired by the Number Devil: Imagine Jason, a struggling math student in the midst of summer school, getting swooped away to learn about the coordinate plane from a Pablo Picasso painting. Or Mohammed, a young boy who finds a golden canteen which, when rubbed, brings forth the Number Genie who takes him on a mathematical adventure around the world.

University Of Oregon's take on PBL

This looks to be a good resource for K-12 inquiry-based projects that focus primarily on math and science (though there are connections to social studies and language arts). It is searchable by grade and subject.

The work of this program is to engage students in innovative learning experiences and portray STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields as viable areas for all students to explore as part of their world and community. The work is a continuation of Leading Project Based (original work) Learning as STEM and Universal Design for Learning are incorporated.

This was a great doctoral thesis featuring a high school involving PBL and its correlation with the Science, Technology, and Math concentrations. It was well written with a great literature review, descriptive definitions and pictures/graphics throughout. This thesis is a great resource for statistics and research regarding PBL.

This project could easily be adapted to become more than it is. This project integrates written and oral language skills along with math to help students understand what makes a business successful. Kids are interested in making money, so why not let them come up with a business idea?

A math/engineering PBL project that can also be tied to science.

This study compared 7th and 8th graders' achievement between groups of students who engaged in project-based learning with those who did not. This study is based on Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory, a method of experiential learning that starts with observation and reflections that leads to abstract concepts that lead to new ideas and thinking (Cervantes et al., 2015). The learning cycle, pictured below helps students learn and practice 21st-century learning skills needed for both college and career. The groups that engaged in project-based learning outperformed the groups that did not engage in PBL in both STAAR reading and math tests(Cervantes et al., 2015).
