The World's Most Secure Prison: ADX Florence « Sometimes Interesting - 0 views

  •
"ADX Florence, built south of Florence Colorado in 1994, is the most secure prison in the United States prison system. Commonly called a "Supermax" prison, it has 490 beds in a compound which encompasses 37 acres. The prison was designed to house prisoners deemed too dangerous or high-profile for regular incarceration and nearly 95% of all inmates that have been sent to Florence were transfers with histories of violent behavior in other prison facilities. Guinness World Records acknowledges ADX Florence as being the most secure prison in the world. "

The Hindu : Arts / History & Culture : The magic of arches - 0 views

"There is nothing to support the arch, even the binding materials that held the stones together, close to 700 years ago, are gone. The keystone is in place and the true arch holds, for that is the magic of the true arch -- the magic of the keystone."

An article about a Cargo Cult, that all but worships a man named John Frum. "John promised he'll bring planeloads and shiploads of cargo to us from America if we pray to him," a village elder tells me as he salutes the Stars and Stripes. "Radios, TVs, trucks, boats, watches, iceboxes, medicine, Coca-Cola and many other wonderful things."

Information on Leather Armor - 0 views

  •
"At the dawn of human civilization, one of the first ancient hunters throws a crude spear, no more than a sharpened stick, and by some miracle brings down a sickly animal at the back of a herd. The warrior drags it back to his camp where he quickly finds what is edible or useful on the animal. He discovers bones, skin, and teeth don't taste very good and decides to find other uses for them. Bones become weapons, teeth trinkets. Without much imagination the warrior uses the hide for the same purpose the animal used it for, protection from the elements and the environment. Over time the hide dries out naturally and the ancient man notices the hide is tougher and lighter. He'll think he won the prehistoric lottery until it rains or he falls into a river. Once the hide gets wet again it will start to rot and smell something awful. "
