I selected this article because of the data it contains relating to the DSM-IV criteria for substance abuse and dependence. I liked the statistical information about the percentages of students who met this criteria. Although the amount of students who met criteria for substance abuse and dependence were high, I thought that it would've been more. I would like to learn more about the available treatment options for students.

I selected this article because I work as a substance abuse counselor and I see many clients that have withdrawn from or failed classes. I liked this article because it highlights the severe, sometimes deadly consequences of drug and alcohol abuse. Students encounter pressure to use drugs or alcohol from numerous places, and usually the negative consequences are not only failed to be mentioned, but even hidden until they are experienced. I would like to know more about how college students who do not engage in abusing substance deal with the social pressure to drink and use.
