the verification email comes from forwardin...@google.com, and not from the source email.  It was being blocked because under Permissions\Default, the only people allowed to post were members - the default setting.  Once I'd changed this to include "Public", the verification email appeared.

www.google.com/calendar/iphoneselect ... also worked for me. It allows you to check which google calendars you want synced to your iPhone. Unfortunately the google help page on getting the iOS calendar syncing set up currently sends you to "http://m.google.com", which is not the correct page.
