The National Academy of the Sciences has launched this new website that gives an overview of the U.S. energy system. It covers 4 main topics: energy uses, sources of energy, the cost of energy (in terms of the environment, national security, and sustainability), and energy efficiency. The site has easy to navigate content and links to source material, and it includes n energy quiz, a glossary, and a source library. The site's producers are also developing curriculum-based materials for high school and middle school classrooms. Two special features--Our Energy System and Understasnding Efficiency--are designed to actively engage visitors and enhance their understanding of energy, including what it is, h ow we use it, and ways to conserve it.

"The Best Resources For Learning Research & Citation Skills September 24, 2009 by Larry Ferlazzo | 8 Comments This "The Best…" list is sort of a combination of two lists I had been thinking of making to go along with The Best Online Resources To Teach About Plagiarism (Another list to keep in mind might be The Best Reference Websites For English Language Learners - 2008). The more I thought about it, though, the more I felt that a list of engaging (and even fun) sites to teach research skills and accessible citation resources would make a good combination. Since a graduation requirement in our district is that seniors need to develop a "Senior Project," I've spent some time finding these kinds of helpful sites that might be accessible to English Language Learners.  I have to say, though, that these sites (except for the first one) would probably only be accessible to more advanced ELL's. Here are my choices for The Best Resources For Learning Research And Citation Skills: LEARNING RESEARCH SKILLS:"

"The Graphic Map is designed to assist teachers and students in reading and writing activities. The organizer focuses on charting the high and low points related to a particular item or group of items, such as chapters in a book, amounts of money spent, events during a day, month, year, or life, or scenes in a play. The Graphic Map creates a graphic representation of these high and low points that displays related images and descriptions. The interactive can be used as a prewriting activity, as students map ideas for an autobiography; as a postreading activity, as students map the significance of events in a story; and as a reflection and assessment activity, as students map the high and low points of their inquiry process."

NBC Learn has launched this website called Finishing the Dream. It chronicles the h istory of the civil rights movement. It includes more then 100 stories from NBC News archives. Materials include documentaries on significan events over the course of 60 years, including the Montgomery bus boycott; the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.; the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas; the Freedom Riders; and more. The content provides the opportunity for community leaders, teachers, and students to discuss the impact of the civil rights movement and to consider related modern issues that affect people today.

Ghost Blasters is designed to help students learn to multiply and divide quickly in their heads. To play Ghost Blasters select a multiple of which each "bad" ghost will have a value that is a multiple of that which you chose. Students then use their mouse to blast every "bad" ghost. For example, if I select "5" at the beginning then all bad ghosts will display a multiple of 5. I then have to blast all of the bad ghosts to gain points, but if I blast a "good" ghost (a ghost that does not have a multiple of 5) I lose points.

Smart Kit (no affiliation with SMART) offers a large collection of games, puzzles, and riddles for students of all ages. The content of the collection ranges from simple drilling-style games to challenging word puzzles. There are sixteen categories of games offered by Smart Kit. The categories of most interest to educators are probably the math puzzles and word puzzles categories.

Daily Grammar provides simple and clear lessons on the basics of English grammar for grades 5-12. Set up in modules of five examples and a follow-up quiz, the simiplicity of the approach and the explanations make this a great site for students to use on their own when they feel they need self-paced remediation or enrichment. Mr. Bill Johanson, the author of the material, is a former junior and high school English teacher, with 30 years experience in the classroom.

This site has numerous (2,100) carefully selected and annotated resources. You can click on the lobby link on the main page to go to the resources. You can click on the welcome to K12imc.org a t the bottom to go to the instructional media center where there are additional links taking you to specific locations on the site. At the bottom of the IMC page you can click on explore the worlds of K12IMC.org and within the explore page you will be able to link to more resources that are clearly described. Within each of the resource links you will go to a page where there will be a variety of content specific links. This site was interesting. There were lessons for teachers, there was a link on the explor page that will take you to experts in various fields. This is a site worth checking out because a user could, through this one site, find numerous credible and useable resources.

Found this site to be very interesting and loaded with lots of useable resources.

There is a free trial version of the materials in the National Library of virtual manipulatives. Math topics Numbers and Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement and Data Analysis & Probablity are covered. I did not come across anything asking for money so I a not certain there is a cost. There are tons of manipulatives to access from each of the above categories. This site is associated with the Uta State University.

Edward Bonver's Poetry Lovers' Page provides the complete poetry collections of Famous English and Russian poets for grades 6-12. Included are the poems of Edgar allan Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson, and rudyard Kiplint, as well as the poems of Aleksandr Pushkin, Aleksandr blok, and anna Akhmatova. The site also contains poems submitted by readers, and features links to a poem of the day and a random poem.

This site provides Activity types for various content areas. If you click on each of the active content links you will see that a variety of activitie types are identified as well as types of technology that could be used to facilitate that activity. I found it very interesting and would be helpful for tech coaches or teachers.

This is a good site, It would be very helpful for a person just getting started to look at their content area and see the types of activities listed (select the content area and then select the activity type link within the page). Each activity listed also has a list of technology that could be used to facilitate that activity.

Thinking about numbers using frames of 5 can be a helpful way to learn basic number facts. The four games that can be played with this applet help to develop counting and addition skills. Instructions Choose one of the four games that can be played with this applet: How Many: Identify how many items or empty squares there are. Build: Drag a certain number of items to the frame. Fill: Determine how many items are needed to fill the remaining squares. Add: Drag items to complete addition problems. Choosing Play All from the Games menu will randomize which of the four games is played.

Shape It Up is one of many good educational games and activities on Kinetic City. Shape It Up is an activity that would be good for use in an elementary school Earth Science lesson. The activity presents students with "before" and "after" images of a piece of Earth. Students then have to select the force nature and the span of time it took to create the "after" picture. If students choose incorrectly, Shape It Up will tell the student and they can choose again.

The National Center for Education Statistics hosts a collection of games and tools for students. Dare to Compare is a quiz section of Kids' Zone where students can test their knowledge of civics, economics, history, geography, mathematics, and science. After taking each quiz the students are shown the correct answers. Dare to Compare also allows students to see the national and international average rate of correct answers.

Encyclopedia of the Earth an electronic reference about the Earth, its natural environmetns, and their interaction with society. It is a free, fully searchable collection of articles written by scholars, professionals, educators, and experts who collaborate and review each other's work. The articles are written in non-technical language and are useful to students, educators, scholars, and professionals, as well as to the general public.

At a quick glance this site appears to have a lot of information about a variety of science related topics.
