Lansing Police Officer Suspended for Taser Incident - FOX 17 - 1 views

  •
Video shows 2-year veteran tasering a man who was in handcuffs. Officer Ryan Smith, a two-year veteran of the department, has been suspended without pay for two weeks.
  •
From the video, I think the officer used excessive and unneccessary force. The man was handcuffed and standing still, but the police still made the decision to taser him.

He sounds like such an inspiring person. I'm grateful that there are people like him out fighting for our country.

Army dad, son take on Taliban; mom worries - CNN.com - 1 views

  •
Its nice that the father and son both have someone close to them to talk to if they ever need support. Its a weird coincidence, but not neccessarily a bad one. I think it would be especially hard on Marylisa Miller to have both a husband and son at war - she must worry all the time.

  • Enough Afghan opium to supply world demand for two years has effectively gone missing
    • Rebecca Hauk

wow. i'm assuming that means crazy amounts of opium since its needed for two years throughout the whole world! I was not aware that Afghanistan had this much effect on the world opium trade.

It seems that the Afghanistan that Zieba Shorish Shamley remembers is the exact opposite of the Afghanistan that we hear about on the news today. I never knew that the country used to be so peaceful and democratic. The article says that this was how Afghanistan was until the 80's, when conflict began arising. I hope that with the removal of the Taliban and al Qaeda, and the improvement of the country's economy and government, that Afghanistan can eventually once again be the beautiful, tolerant country it was not so long ago.

Hundreds of Afghan votes declared invalid - CNN.com - 0 views

  •
I think its unfortunate that there was so much fraud during this election, but the article doesn't say why the fraud happened. Was it an accident? On purpose? Even if the officials can eventually figure out which votes were valid and which were not, the outcome of that election would not change, would it? Hopefully, Afghanistan will implement a better voting process in the future in order to aviod this much fraud.

  • Some helping to shape the strategy support counterinsurgency, which would involve a large number of troops focused on fighting the Taliban, plus efforts to rebuild the country and its economic system. Others, such as Vice President Joe Biden, favor a counterterrorism strategy in which a limited number of troops would target only al Qaeda.
    • Rebecca Hauk

I think that in order to defeat al Qaeda like Joe Biden mentioned, it will prove neccessary to fight the Taliban and improve Afghanistan's central government and economy as well.
  • Some critics have said the White House is playing politics with the decision and putting U.S. troops at risk
    • Rebecca Hauk

It is important to put political parties aside so the government can focus on the best strategy in Afghanistan, no matter if it is Republican or Democrat.
  •
The White House needs to put political differences aside and really focus on finding the best strategy. As General McChrystal said, the time will eventually come when the U.S. will either fail in Afghanistan or pull the troops out, so the Obama administration needs to act quickly and efficiently in reaching an appropriate decision

Two Arguments for What to Do in Afghanistan - TIME - 16 views

  • to put ourselves and friendly Afghans in a position to manage future terrorist threats in that country without a major U.S. combat role.
    • Rebecca Hauk

It seems like both all-outers and middle-grounders of the war in Afghanistan want to do just that, but they have different methods of doing so.

Two Arguments for What to Do in Afghanistan - TIME - 2 views

  • Under Obama, the Pentagon has already sent a surge of 21,000 troops to Afghanistan, and the Administration is even weighing the possibility of deploying as many as 40,000 more.
    • Rebecca Hauk

I think that by sending in more troops, the U.S. will have a better chance of doing what it needs to do and getting out of Afghanistan more quickly than it would with less troops.
  • Afghanistan as it was in the 1970s, a country at peace internally and with its neighbors, whose towering mountains and exotic peoples drew tourists from around the world.
    • Rebecca Hauk

This sounds like a great ideal - I hope Afghanistan can go back to how it was over time.
