Welcome to Wonderopolis®, a place where natural curiosity and imagination lead to exploration and discovery in learners of all ages. Brought to life by the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL), our Wonders of the Day® will help you find learning moments in everyday life-ones that fit in with dinner preparations, carpool responsibilities, a stolen moment between breakfast and the bus, or within school curriculum and education programs. Wonder is for everyone. It can happen anywhere and at anytime. Connecting the learning we do in our schools, our homes, and our communities, Wonderopolis walks the line between formal and informal education. Each day, we pose an intriguing question and explore it in a variety of ways. Our approach both informs and encourages new questions, sparking new paths of wonder and discovery in family and classroom settings. - See more at: http://wonderopolis.org/about/#sthash.X4AZFEHQ.dpuf

LearnZillion - 1 views

  •
LearnZillion is a learning platform that combines video lessons, assessments, and progress reporting. Each lesson highlights a Common Core standard, starting with math in grades 3-9. We started LearnZillion at E.L. Haynes Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. because we wanted to solve a problem. We knew what lessons our students needed but we didn't have enough time to teach each student the right lesson. To create more time, and to share best practices across classrooms, E.L. Haynes' teachers began to capture their expertise on screencasts. We posted them on a homemade website and coupled them with a short quiz to help us track student progress. Soon the idea grew. What if teachers from across the country could contribute to the site? What if new teachers could learn the new Common Core standards from the wisdom of experienced teachers? What if students could get a playlist of lessons that matched their needs? What if, over time, the video lessons got stronger and stronger, as more teachers contributed and the data showed which lessons had the biggest impact? Thanks to funding from the Next Generation Learning Challenge, NewSchools Venture Fund, Achievement Network, and others, we are about to find out!

DOGO News - Kids news articles! Kids current events; plus kids news on science, sports,... - 0 views

  •
DOGO Media is a next-generation online network empowering kids to engage with digital media in a fun, safe and social environment. "DOGO" means young or small in Swahili. While our young fans may be small, they act BIG as they engage with our websites and express their opinions on the content that interests and inspires them. DOGOnews was created in '09 by a young mother in the SF Bay Area who couldn't find a reliable and safe source for her grammar school children to use for current events assignments. The word spread…first a couple of classmates read it, then teachers at the school found out about it, and now thousands of students and teachers from around the world are using the DOGO websites in-and-out of the classroom on a daily basis. What started as a small project has quickly grown to a community of kids and educators engaging positively on the current events, books, movies … (and lots more to come) that excite them!

Free Technology for Teachers: 5 Tools Students Can Use to Create Alternative Book Reports - 0 views

  •
"This afternoon someone emailed me asking for some suggestions for tools for creating book trailer videos. It has been two years since I last wrote about the topic so I created a new list of tools for creating book trailers. Book trailers are short videos designed to spark a viewer's interest in a book. Having students create book trailers is an excellent alternative to traditional book report projects. A great place to find examples of book trailers is Book Trailers for Readers."

"Field trips get students out of the classroom and into the world, discovering new things, and learning in authentic environments. But for many schools and students, they're an unfortunate rarity. Thankfully there are tech tools that can bring places and experiences fostered by field trips to the classroom."

iPads in Mathematics - 0 views

  • On the whole, there are too many apps focused on rote learning and simple number facts and equations. Having said that, I actually believe the iPad has much to offer teachers and students in Mathematics.
  • The good news from my perspective is that the iPad already is ready to replace textbooks and make Maths an engaging real world experience.
  • Whether you choose Explain Everything, ShowMe, Educreations or ScreenChomp (depending on price, features or usability), using these apps to record children’s learning is a killer feature of the iPad for me.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • If you are lucky enough to have access to an AppleTV and a full set of iPads, the whole class can switch from one student’s iPad screen to another to participate in an engaging real time discussion without waiting for their turn on the interactive whiteboard.
  • Their recordings can be saved and posted to blogs or other online options to share with outside audiences, with possibilities of feedback or collaboration.
  •
Amazing possibilities for math I think with the apps discussed in this blog. Love the idea of students recording how they solved math problem on an iPad and then sharing with the class via the interactive white board. Wow!
