Magnum Photos - - 0 views

  •
A feature on Magnum's website showing the work of Moises Saman and his documentation of foreign volunteers fighting with the YPG in Syria. I think the work is stunning and it will end up being a historically significant record of a few brave people willing to join the fight even though it wasn't their own.

Day 2 of Syrian Partial Truce Is Marred by Violence - The New York Times - 0 views

  •
Another New York Times article about the weekend truce. Unfortunately according to the article it seems that Russia used the clause that allows airstrikes against ISIS, as an opportunity to also bomb some opposition fighters positions.

Truce, Cease-Fire and Armistice: The Legal Nuances - The New York Times - 0 views

  •
A New York Times article talking about the differences as far as legal terms between a truce, a cease-fire, and an armistice. I think that it's an excellent article to include because there's a lot of mixing and matching of these three terms by media sources when in actuality they are very different.

Syria conflict: US-Russia brokered truce to start at weekend - BBC News - 0 views

  •
A BBC article talking about the US and Russia brokered truce that is supposed to start this weekend. The article also includes a fantastic map created by the BBC to show the zones of control and where various airstrikes have been taking place. While this doesn't have anything to do with the arms involved in Syrian conflict I think this is too significant to ignore this week and therefore I have dedicated my tags to it.

Syria | Reports from the front lines | [English Subtitles] - YouTube - 0 views

  •
A Russian news report from Zvezda (Star) channel, including interviews with pro-Syrian army militia commanders. The video is all in Russian but includes English subtitles and takes an interesting look at the system of tunnels various groups are using in this conflict. I chose this because it was a another look at the current conflict from a Russian channel but without the extreme propaganda one finds in the Russia Today articles.

German World War II Era Wehrmacht Howitzer Used By Syrian Rebels On The Battlefield In ... - 0 views

  •
A video from YouTube showing Syrian rebels using a German 10.5 cm LeFH 18 which is a 105 mm howitzer from the 1930s. The info section of the video claims that the Syrian army supposedly operated a few of these so the rebels most likely captured it from a base. I tagged this because it ties into my question from last week of where did Syria get all of these formerly Nazi made weapons.

This is an article from Russia today that talks about supposed gains that the Syrian government has made with the support of Russian air power. It has an accompanying video of the Syrian Armed Forces fighting against rebels. Overall a piece of propaganda, but interesting footage nonetheless of Syrian Armed Forces using a variety of US and Russian-made weapons.

Syrian Civil War: New Russian Weapons Sent To Assad's Forces - 0 views

  •
An article from the International Business Times discussing the involvement of Russian troops in the Syrian Civil War and a video of Russian troops "training" in Syria. I've put the word "training" because I believe that as much is I believe that as much as I believe Pres. Kennedy when he said we sent "advisers" to Vietnam.

WWII Weapons In The Syrian Civil War - The Firearm Blog - 0 views

  •
An article from the firm's blog talking about World War II weapons being used in the Syrian Civil War. I found both the article and accompanying video very interesting. Besides showing a bunch of very old weapons being used and the essentially finding new life in this conflict, it also shows a government stockpile seized by rebels full of Stg 44s (assault rifles from Nazi Germany). For me this raises the question of how did they get there?

TOW Missile vs T-72 Tank In Slow Motion - YouTube - 0 views

  •
A weapons test video on a closed range, while on its own is not that important, the video ties in very well with my other three links this week. I think too often there is a disconnect between this idea okay we are arming these people (rebels) and what does that mean, hopefully this video in conjunction with the others helps bridge that disconnect.

Syria receives Russian weapons to battle ISIL - YouTube - 0 views

  •
A news report talking about the Syrian army receiving jets from Russia while also showing some of their armor specifically the Russian-made T-72. While not the most sophisticated main battle tank anymore, it still poses a major threat to anyone without access to anti-armor weaponry.

Kobane - Before and After The War - YouTube - 0 views

  •
The video contains quite a bit of footage shot in the streets during firefights and also contains lots of before and after shots of the city. I found the direct before-and-after comparison shots really powerful and it was for a sort of visual representation of the scale of destruction going on.

  •
This video shows a Syrian army armored vehicle being hit and disabled by a TOW missile. I think this is worth linking because it is a visual representation of what the US armed rebels actually means.
