Libya, given it's instability due to years of warfare and practically no government, has become a new safe haven for ISIS. If left alone, ISIS could make Libya what Afghanistan or Yemen were to Al Qaeda. This would also have major consequences for Europe, specifically Southern Italy and other Mediterranean countries given Libya's close proximity to southern Europe.

Another example of the refugee crisis in Libya. While it is in close proximity to the Italian island of Sicily, cramming people onto rafts and small boats is in incredibly dangerous task that seems to leave those migrants in far worse shape than when they left. However, these people are desperate to flee a region full of terror and horrific atrocities.

Human rights conditions are further deteriorating in Libya. These are not only Libyan citizens but as the article points out, refugees from other Middle Eastern countries who are seeking asylum in Europe.

Much like Iraq, Libya has fallen into a period of lawlessness without a stable and effective government to keep order and stability. Taking advantage of this are not only various regional militias but the Islamic State (ISIS). It appears as if Libya will again be on the front lines of fighting terrorism, much like Iraq ans Syria.

One issue that is repeatedly injected into 2016 Presidential race are the events that occurred in Benghazi. Politics aside, it is important to remember the profound effects that events within the Middle East have around the world and in our political discourse.
