Finally, aid has made it to Deir al-Zor. This eastern city has been besieged by ISIS militants for some time now. I will be keeping an eye out to see how the aid is used. This is also interesting because the city is in a part of the country that is less accessible to government forces, with ISIS being in control of the surrounding area.

Battle in Yemen has left many displaced and in need of goods and healthcare. The blockade has made it difficult for humanitarian organizations to deliver aid to Yemen.

Hamas and the PA have officially joined to form a unity government. The US sent the PA $400 million in aid, but now the funds are being shared in one way or another.

The first aid convoys have reached the besieged city of Muadhamiya. The convoys will hopefully defuse the hostility and resume the peace talks.

Aid trucks have arrived in beseiged towns throughout Syria, in a hope by the world powers and the UN that will lead to a "cessation of hostilities". Almost 500,000 people live in beseiged areas, according to the UN.

An American woman who was also a former member of the US military was arrested in April and officially charged in July with conspiring to aid members of ISIS. She was arrested when trying to board a plane to Syria where she was planning to meet a Tunisian man and aid the groups in attacks. This story also cites another woman who was arrested on similar charges, it is one of many examples of Americans going abroad to join Isis.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem stated on Monday, February 9, 2015 that they will not allow foreign ground troops on its territory to fight ISIS. While Syria does not want foreign ground troops, they did ask to coordinate with Jordan against ISIS but Jordan did not respond to their request. For now, Jordan and Syria are not coordinating against terrorist attacks by ISIS and Syria will not take aid from other foreign states.

The Syrian government has approved humanitarian access to seven besieged areas, the UN has said. This aid is long overdue, as people have been dying of starvation. 

This article is particularly relevant to our discussion in class on Tuesday. A UN plea for aid funding has largely gone unanswered, with only 2 donors giving approximately 1% of what was asked for. The UN representative questioned why no one would give by saying "the U.N. cannot "explain or justify why the international community hesitates to provide humanitarian funding." Perhaps because it's unstable? Perhaps because the world is trying to avoid another corrupt leader such as Gaddafi?

This article depicts a very real and recent trauma that Yemen is undergoing; their healthcare system and facilities, much like other poorer middle eastern countries, is on the brink of extinction. This raised the question that we have been discussing in class; would foreign aid eliminate poverty? While there are millions in Yemen starving, would it be justified to provide their country with aid as more developed countries are supplying refugee camps in Jordan and Syrian rebels?

The goals range from various aspects including career development, civic participation, reducing poverty (including an increase in girl's enrollment in school), and an increase in healthy habits and standards. The concerns and goals listed also reflect the outline of the  U.N. Commission on the Status of Women.

USAID helps women gain equality and they promote women empowerment. It helps through various programs in agriculture, education, and health.

Another IS hostage has been beheaded. The hostage was British aid worker was David Haines. According to The Huffington Post, the video showed how IS addressed British PM David Cameron and his policies against the group. Haines had been abducted last year in Syria.

The United States will increase military aid to Tunisia and help train its troops. The U.S. government aimed to provide Tunisia with more equipment, weapons and technical support. Tunisian Prime Minister said he wants to enhance their ability to defeat those who threaten the freedom and safety of the nation.
