Dr. Khelife Hanouti is accused of running an illegal abortion clinic in Algeria. He is also involved in falsifying "disclaimer" documents signed by single mothers and illegally transferring children abroad. He is also involved in kidnapping twin girls and selling them to a couple in France.

Human trafficking is the only way some people are able to leave their African country and make it to Europe. People leave with all of their savings in an attempt to cross the desert for a better life, but only have a 10% chance of having a successful journey.

Algeria is known for being a destination and gateway for human trafficking. There are organizations that try to help children avoid being victims of human trafficking by trying to keep them off the streets at a young.

This dissertation written by United Nations Commissioner for Refugees Laura Waas, provides some more academic insight into what exactly constitutes as stateless peoples in the Middle East and North African regions as well as the underlying conditions and legislation these stateless persons have developed. Waas points to the lack of nationality as the primary concern.

The 'Arab Spring' of 2011 brought down autocratic governments across North Africa and the Middle East. But, despite widespread street protests that initially threatened to spark a Tunisian or Egyptian style revolt, an expected uprising in Algeria failed to materialise.

The European Union has imposed sanctions on three prominent Libyan politicians opposed to the installation of a UN-backed government. The sanctions target the leaders of two rival administrations that have been vying for power amid the chaos after the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi. All three face travel bans and asset freezes.
