      Companies always complain about competition when it's too late and they've already missed the band wagon. These other companies have had chances even if it was small and incremental to make improvements to their broadband offerings and they chose not too. They also had an opportunity to bid for this stimulus money and unfortunately they did not receive it. If they had they would not be complaning right now.
  • These local phone and cable companies fear that they will have to compete with governmentsubsidized broadband systems, paid for largely with stimulus dollars. If the taxpayer-funded networks siphon off customers by offering lower prices, private companies might be less likely to upgrade their lines, endangering jobs and undermining the stimulus plan's goals, they warn.

      this is similar to Googles plan to introduce gigabit service to smaller cities on a limited scale to see if the results are profitable. I will be interesting to see if these underdeveloped areas really do take advantage of this service or if it will be lost on them.

      I don't see a reason why Google shouldn't be sharing some of the millions their making off of YouTube and Google video advertising with service providers considering the amount of resources they are taking up but I do not agree with comcast restricting access to the site as a secondary option.

      I could understand the thoughth behind possibly wanting to slow down illegal downloads and make them less appealing to people but then to decide to slow down YouTube because it eats up bandwidth as well. At what point do they stop?

  • The analysis showed that fewer web sites are selling and promoting controlled substances than last year (361 vs. 581); in the new report, 206 sites were found to advertise drugs and 159 offered drugs for sale. However, only two are "legitimate" pharmacy sites, meaning they have received certification by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy as a Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Site (VIPPS). To receive VIPPS accreditation, a pharmacy site must comply with the licensing and inspection requirements of their state and each state that they dispense prescriptions in.
  • Half of the sites that require prescriptions allowed faxed copies, creating a "significant opportunity for fraud." The drugs most frequently offered for sale were drugs such as Xanax and Valium, followed closely by opioid painkillers including hydrocodone (contained in drugs like Vicodin, Lortab), codeine, and oxycodone (contained in drugs such as OxyContin and Percocet). The number of sites offering stimulants for sale increased to levels not seen since 2004.
  • The report showed many sites do not require prescriptions: 85% of online pharmacy anchor sites did not require a prescription to buy controlled drugs. Of that group, 42% specifically said that no prescription was needed. 13% never mentioned a prescription. 45% offered an "online consultation." The study also shows that many sites get their drugs from overseas: Slightly less than a fourth of online pharmacy anchor sites said the drugs would ship from a U.S. pharmacy. 40% said they'd come from outside the U.S. 36% didn't say where the drug would be shipped from.

  • In April, the U.S. Senate passed a bill controlling Internet trafficking of controlled prescription drugs. The bill calls for federal certification of online pharmacies and prohibits the delivery, distribution, or dispensing of controlled substances online without a prescription issued by a practitioner who has conducted at least one in-person medical evaluation. The bill awaits House approval.

    This article dovetails with the PEW study on internet useage. It gives data of age groups and the change in the amount of time they use online email versus the time they spend on mobile email. As you would think, age 12 to 17 has moved from the web at a very high percentage.

    This is a recent article I found that relate's to this weeks topic of social networking. The article discusses the uses of social networking for older generations, and provides many statistics, some of which come from the Pew Project we study. As the article shows, older generations use social networking for many of the same uses as teens and young adults. The article may be help you think of questions related to this week's discussions.     This article covers research by Turku University on the effects of cyberbullying. The text explains the possible negative effects that online bullying can have on the victims as well as the bullies themselves. I found it interesting and somewhat sad that teens can't get away from bullies anymore-- while being home and out of school was often a getaway from bothersome peers, that is becoming less and less the case.
