I've been hearing a lot of people talking about how Overwatch 2 is dying, and how TF2 is still going strong. I'm curious about the reasons behind it. Is it just nostalgia for TF2, or are there actual game design choices that have made it more sustainable over time? I don't want to assume it's all just because of updates or lack of interest in Overwatch 2.

Nostalgia definitely plays a part, but it's not the only reason. TF2 has an open-ended design that lets players experiment, mod, and create their own experiences. Meanwhile, Overwatch 2 is more rigid in its approach, trying to control the player experience too tightly. That stifles creativity and makes people feel boxed in, which leads to frustration and, ultimately, players leaving.

It's true, TF2's longevity is partly due to how much freedom it gives to the community. If you're really interested in this topic, there's a great article that goes into detail about it https://www.southwestjournal.com/gaming/why-team-fortress-2-is-thriving/ It breaks down how both games' approaches to player engagement have shaped their current states. I found it really insightful when I was trying to figure out why people keep going back to TF2.
