Most copyright questions that arise at the university revolve around issues of ownership of new works, or fair use of existing works. Related questions arise with respect to managing our copyrights, negotiating publication agreements, developing digital libraries, and posting materials to Web servers. The answers to these and many other copyright questions will almost always begin with a few fundamental principles of copyright law. BYU's official Copyright Policy states, "All members of the BYU community-faculty, staff, students, volunteers, and patrons-are expected to respect the rights of copyright owners as established by relevant state and federal laws. In college courses, we are continually engaged with other people's ideas: we read them in texts, hear them in lecture, discuss them in class, and incorporate them into our own writing. As a result, it is very important that we give credit where it is due. Plagiarism is using others' ideas and words without clearly acknowledging the source of that information.
