1. Hans Rosling claimed his main message to be "the seemingly impossible is possible". Do you feel that this presentation actually proved his point, if you were convinced what do u think made you think this way?
2. Do you think data visualization would be as influential in regards to political power and influence if it weren't for the growth of internet media?
I think his message of the seemingly impossible being possible is great in theory but it is harder to put into play. In a sense I feel like he vamped his main message by including colorful charts and visuals to capture the audiences attention. It is easy to show what needs to be achieved but where this falls short is offering possible solution to complete the task at hand.
I think that the data representation would be just as influential whether or not there was a growth of internet media. This is because Rosling, or any political figure, is presenting hard data. Whether that data is presented using a chart on a piece of paper or a chart on a power point, the facts are still the same and just as powerful. It is true that people do tune out some aspects of internet media because we are so accustomed to it, but I think that because there are no ads in the sidebar of Rosling's speech it is almost easier for someone to pay attention to what he is presenting.
I think that data visualization is a powerful way to display information whether the internet existed or not but the internet has allowed for collection and dispersion of information for these visualizations to be collected and distributed on a scale never seen before.
I think that internet media has trained our brains to only pay attention to things that only interest our desires. This makes the human eye prone to generalization which can fog important information that we should know as voters in a Democratic society. We live in a fast passed society that relies on getting things done quickly. So therefor most American's would more likely want to get the bigger picture of political information and news rather than looking and analyzing data that is presented to them as voters. The internet media only furthers our need to get things done quickly, therefor we I agree with Sharena that the message can be powerful but it is not as powerful due to internet media.
