Nigeria is Free of Ebola - 0 views

Now that Nigeria has been declared ebola free, there is a sense of relief that the virus can be contained; however, with over 9,000 people having been infected (and growing) the epidemic still has enormous potential to grow and the response should remain aggressive. It is a blessing and a curse that Nigeria is ebola free, though, because now more infected people will be sent there in hopes of being treated with Nigeria's so called "better care", increasing the chances of the ebola virus being reintroduced into the country.
Hong Kong Students Brave Pepper Spray in Clashes With Riot Police - 0 views

I am always drawn to articles that highlight young people being involved in their local governments. They seem to be the most relevant to me and my peers' lives. This article is super interesting because it gave me a lot of information I didn't know regarding Chinese government. The main speaker/ activist at this riot was apparently a small 17 year old boy accompanied by hundreds of students fighting for a democratic election in 2017. You could tell from his words how passionate he was about the topic: "Hong Kong's future belongs to you, you and you..I want to tell C.Y. Leung and Xi Jinping that the mission of fighting for universal suffrage does not rest upon the young people, it is everyone's responsibility..I don't want the fight for democracy to be passed down to the next generation. This is our responsibility." This article was inspiring and reminded me how deeply current political decisions affect the youth; this is why I think it is important for us to at least be educated about all of the crazy world politics going on around us outside of this "American bubble" we continue to contently live in.
Cycles of Revenge in Israel and Palestine - 3 views

I think it's interesting how this article on the Israel-Palestine conflict puts the conflict into perspective, especially for young readers. The article explains the cycles of revenge that continue to give the violence in the Middle East ammunition. However, the details of the revenge prove relevance because it is about the purposeless murders of teenagers who have nothing to do with the conflict whatsoever. It is also interesting how the writer mentions the irony of all of the immoral killings occurring in a place that has been called "The Holy Land". The article begins with a quote from the Israeli prime minister explaining that Israel is a state of laws. The writer boldly disagrees with this, stating, "This is not what happens in a state of laws". He also accuses Israel's "democracy" as being undemocratically oppressive. Essentially, he is critiquing the leaders on both sides of the conflict and assigning them responsibility for the senseless acts of the killing of innocent youth in the name of revenge.
