This isn't for the international news assignment but I just thought it was an interesting and relevant article. I don't think that these contentions are even comparable to what has happened this year but I just found it interesting to learn that election results have been contested in congress many times prior to yesterday.

This article from Aljazeera summarizes the response from world leaders with regards to today's attack on capital hill. In general, they all expressed similar sentiments that seemed to condemn the acts of violence, support a peaceful transition of power, and hope America is able to return to being a "temple of democracy."

In Athens, members of the neo-Nazi political party Golden Dawn are undergoing a trial for their alleged involvement in criminal gang activity. Many of the members have already been convicted of crimes and now the public is just waiting to see the sentencing results. Given that this hateful party has been able operate for such a long time, their conviction shows that Greece and their democracy no longer tolerate corruption or violence.

China has begun giving tens if not hundreds of thousands of people who they consider to be essential workers coronavirus vaccines that have yet to pass phase 3 clinical trials, sparking world wide unrest regarding the risk to both those who are taking vaccines with potentially dangerous side effects and others who they may infect due to them not taking safety precaution since they believe themselves to be immune.

In response to Britain's prime minister, Boris Johnson, attempting to push a trade deal with the United States that could possibly undermine the Good Friday Agreement with Ireland, Joe Biden essentially said that he, along with congress, would oppose the bill if it ruptured the Good Friday Agreement and led to the return of a hard border with Ireland. This obviously created a lot of tension and, given that republicans generally support Brexit and have less loyalty to the Good Friday Agreement than Democrats, the future relationship between the US and UK could be dependent on how this year's presidential election goes.

This article discussed the plans for reopening college football within the United States amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. I was drawn to the article because I was interested in learning about the guidelines and restrictions the United States was using to reopening recreational activities, such as college football. Through reading the article, I thought it was interesting that there was no coherent reopening plan, like with the NBA, but rather that different states and universities had very differing plans regarding what guidelines and restrictions will be in-place for reopening this activity. I would be interested in taking a deeper look into how other countries have attempted to reopen recreational activities and how their methods were different from those taken here.
