As Coal Boosts Mozambique, The Rural Poor Are Left Behind - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
Relates to Story of Stuff where Annie Leonard says "According to companies setting up shop in the third world, the locals "don't own these resources even if they've been living there for generations, they don't oven the means of production and they're not buying a lot of stuff.  And in this system, if you don't own or buy a lot of stuff, dou don't have value."

A Transcript of a UN Committee Meeting About Transnational Crime - 0 views

  •
From drug trafficking to illegal fishing, transnational crime is growing. This is a transcript of a "third committee" meeting addressing some of the issues of transnational criminal organizations today. We've talked a lot about recognized and legal transnational organization, this article illuminates the fact that the aforementioned are not the only flavor available.

Getting Over Our Two-Year Itch - 0 views

  •
This is an interesting article that goes with "The Story of Our Stuff." Pogue writes about our need to constantly replace our products (he offers some solutions as well). A very cool fact: in Europe, all cell-phone chargers have the same type of power cord. The EU mandated it.

Netanyahu Accuses Rivals of Plotting to 'Steal' Israeli Election - 3 views

  •
It is crazy to think that the Israeli government is using minorities lack of confidence in government to their advantage. He is turning away those who are most vital to the stability of his country.
  •
It's very interesting to see how the current Israeli prime minister is trying to "prevent" election fraud by putting cameras to view the elections.
  •
Netanyahu was brilliant to propose the cameras to prevent election fraud because he has effectively created a safety net for himself. If he passes the bill, it will show him as getting stuff done, and could promote his candidacy. If he loses, all he has to do is say that there was election fraud due to no cameras. "Pre-election trick" was the perfect description here.

The Secret Files of the Master of Modern Republican Gerrymandering | The New Yorker - 6 views

  •
Pretty messed up stuff. I did not even realize that problems like this existed. Very interesting article.
  •
This is intense; before reading about this, I was unaware of how much work and manipulation goes into controlling districts behind the scenes, and how easy it is to get away with this and keep it secret. I was also surprised how much data on voting patterns, especially by race, is available to be used for things like this.

Protests Stretch China's Censorship to Its Limits - 0 views

  •
As social media blows up with new clips of protests and confrontations, China's social media platforms are taking up to a few days to delete content. Rather then simply recording, the population is starting to use filters or recording people's phone who are recording the protests, preventing AI from deleting videos. This forces actual people to have to go through and delete all clips.
  •
I wonder how China will react to people getting around the filters and how they will punish people who post this stuff on social media. My guess would be an even greater crackdown by the government on social media.
  •
Pretty brilliant and persistent on the protestors' behalf!
