Nigeria History of Modern Medical Services - Flags, Maps, Economy, History, Climate, Na... - 0 views

  •
Before the British colonial government set up hospitals for native Nigerians, Catholic Missions not only set up hospitals but were responsible for the training and education of nurses while many doctors were educated in Europe. The British government set up hospitals but initially these hospitals were only for Europeans, It was not until after WWII that the British government tried to expand medical and hospital access to native Nigerians and medical education. After Nigerian independence a federal republic was set up and ownership of health facilities is distributed between the federal government, the states, and local governments. States hold the largest share of hospital beds at 43% and the federal and local governments at 13% and 11% respectively.

'They just didn't care': families of missing Native women call out indifferent police |... - 1 views

  •
This has been an ongoing event for Native families across America. Children as little as two have been reported missing. And there's been no further progress into their investigations.

Learned the term Missing White Woman Syndrome years ago, and, as the article mentioned, the contrast between the attention Gabby Petito was given as opposed to the thousands of MMIW is heartbreaking. It's a similar case in Canada, as well, where the Indigenous population is greater. I wonder what it will take for the country to invest more, not only into finding these missing women, but also into Indigenous communities at all. They were also hit hard by the pandemic, as well.

Flooding and Nuclear Waste Eat Away at a Tribe's Ancestral Home - 1 views

  •
Much of this tribal land in Minnesota has been damaged beyond repair due to chemical waste, and many Native Americans have a hard time fighting against it.
  •
It is totally unfair the way the Native Americans have repeatedly been ignored even with their health and lives on the line. The nuclear power plant and the dangers it causes reminds me of critical theory from APES. This dangerous power plant is built in a community of disadvantaged people and harms them while serving other people.

Liberian Resiliance - 0 views

  •
Interesting article that discusses how many Liberians are responding to the Ebola virus outbreak. Many Liberians have lived through extreme plight because of the 14 year civil war that ended in 2003. Many Liberian's do not simply turn their back on the sick. The plight they have faced keeps them resilient through the struggle that Ebola creates. They keep humanity alive.

The Arctic Is Shifting to a New Climate Because of Global Warming - 1 views

  •
Global warming is causing the Arctic to become a different kind of climate, one that consists of open water and rain instead of ice and snow. Seasonal air temperatures and number of days with rain as opposed to snow are also changing. The shift to a new type of climate is set to finish by the middle of the century.
  •
This article is a confirmation that the drastic effects of climate change can already be seen. Sea ice has declined around 12 % per decade since the 1970's, causing sea levels to rise drastically. This has forced many Alaska natives that live on the coast to consider relocating. The researchers remind us, though, that it is not too late to make an impactful change if we make reducing carbon emissions a worldwide priority.

Remote workers are flocking to Mexico City. - 0 views

  •
I honestly didn't think this was a very will written article, but it is an interesting look at a potential shift in Mexico's economy due to past legislation.
  •
Mexico City has very relaxed immigration and visa requirement, allowing a new class of foreign business execs to move to the city during the pandemic. Despite a boost to the economy, this influx might be displacing native residents and inflaming an internalized racism called "malinchismo."
