Google Apps Roulette, Round 2 | ZDNet - 3 views

  • The real value proposition here comes from the absolute ease with which complete, ready-to-use solutions to a variety of business problems can be added to an existing Google Apps deployment
  • While Sharepoint and the countless Windows applications that already exist offer powerful solutions, Google Apps and its Marketplace offer nearly unbeatable simplicity in the cloud.

The Management Myth - Magazine - The Atlantic - 0 views

  • “What actually happened,” he wrote, “was that six individuals became a team and the team gave itself wholeheartedly and spontaneously to cooperation … They felt themselves to be participating, freely and without afterthought, and were happy in the knowledge that they were working without coercion.” The lessons Mayo drew from the experiment are in fact indistinguishable from those championed by the gurus of the nineties: vertical hierarchies based on concepts of rationality an

This is similar to one of Gawande's findings in The Checklist Manifesto. Bringing people together, enabling communication and thus a feeling of being a team is one of the best ways to foster innovation, reduce stress and thus errors, address complexity, and create great work.
  • What they don’t seem to teach you in business school is that “the five forces” and “the seven Cs” and every other generic framework for problem solving are heuristics: they can lead you to solutions, but they cannot make you think.
  • M.B.A.s have taken obfuscatory jargon—otherwise known as bullshit—to a level that would have made even the Scholastics blanch.

Are we really collaborating? :: Blog :: Headshift - 0 views

  • simply because people work together to meet objectives and reach goals, doesn't mean they are collaborating
  • efficiency
  • 'Collaboration' thrives on difference, insight and spontaneity, rather than structural harmony
    • Graham Perrin

For me, this is thought-provoking. We're in a multi-institutional and in some ways displaced environment, in which - over a period of fifteen or so years - I have grown weary of choice/proliferation of ICT solutions. Certainly, 'more' and 'diverse' can be good - if the multiples work well with each other - but too often, we find incompatibilities. By coincidence, I have used the word 'harmony' a few times this week; considering past and present approaches to collaboration, greater harmony is *exactly* what I'm aiming for…
    • Graham Perrin

'Harmony of structure' is a fairly loose expression, open to interpretation.

    • Graham Perrin

Add to overuse: misuse, and blatant abuse. I can no longer treat e-mail as a reliable way of communicating. Whilst there is some necessity to read e-mail, I no longer feel any guilt if (amongst scores, hundreds or thousands of other messages) one or two important messages go un-read or ignored.

Too few people realise the worth of Diigo. Hence my pleas for refinement http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/annotated-urls-annotated-links-may-allow-public-anonymous-views-of-some-not-all-private-annotations-7168#3 and wider availability http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/diigolet-get-annotated-link-7124 of the 'Get Annotated Link' feature - excellent for displaying Diigo features to non-users.
  • flexibility
    • Graham Perrin

Such a catchy, feel-good expression: 'more flexibility'. My problem with this: too often, 'more' is offered (or forced) upon us without proper consideration of whether - in the broadest sense - flexibility is genuinely *improved*.
  • providing workers with more
  • can result in new forms of cooperative action, more fruitful collaboration, faster decision-making, and greater productivity
    • Graham Perrin

Providing 'more' of something *might* result in what's described here, but there's a very real danger that if you add to much, people will not know where to start. Put simply, people switch off. I see it regularly

Wikipedia is full of claims that are sourceable in principle, but aren't actually sourced.Mainstream journalists use information from Wikipedia, even if it is not further sourced. (He has an anecdote to illustrate the point.)Those very articles can be viewed as authoritative for Wikipedia's own sourcing purposes. Thus, unsourced information could, by virtue of having been placed in Wikipedia, grow to be regarded as authoritative by Wikipedia itself.

Meatball Wiki: BackStageCommunication - description - 0 views

  • One of the biggest problems of wikidom today is not WikiSpam but the tendency to redraw fundamental parts of communication from the main online community platform ("stage") to BackStage systems. The point of this page is to show why BackStageCommunication is used (it must offer advantages to individuals, otherwise they wouldn't do it) and how this may harm online-communities. But note that there is a difference between PrivateCommunication? and BackStageCommunication and that there may be situations where these are unavoidable.

Claims Collaboration Overload Costs U.S. $588B a Year - 0 views

  • The result is an egregious lack of productivity that may cost the U.S. economy $588 billion a year, according to a report by Basex, which has tabbed information overload as the "Problem of the Year" for 2008.
  • With e-mail as the biggest offender, Basex said users can save time by not e-mailing someone, and then following up with a phone call or an instant message two seconds later
  • Basex also said users must not combine multiple topics or requests in a single e-mail; make sure the subject clearly reflects the topic and urgency of the message; read their e-mails before sending to make sure they make sense; and will not hit reply-all unless necessary or reply with one-word e-mails such as "thanks.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • For all communication, Basex wants to remind workers to be as explicit as possible because their readers are not mind readers. While the statement may seem like an obvious mantra, it is also easily forgotten.
  • "Information Overload: We Have Met the Enemy and He is Us," authored by Basex analysts Jonathan B. Spira and David M. Goldes and released Dec. 19, claims that interruptions from phone calls, e-mails and instant messages eat up 28 percent of a knowledge worker's work day, resulting in 28 billion hours of lost productivity a year. The $588 billion figure assumes a salary of $21 per hour for knowledge workers

Corporate Wikis reviewed: Confluence, JotSpot, WetPaint, Socialtext - 0 views

  • Corporate Wikis reviewed: Confluence, JotSpot, WetPaint, Socialtext by Troy Angrignon on Mon 10 Jul 2006 06:30 AM PDT  |  Permanent Link  |  Cosmos Wikis are on the rise in corporations. And it's about time. One of the principles of Web 2.0 is that your user community can generate content that is better, faster, and probably easier to read than you can as a vendor. One way to enable them to contribute would be to build a wiki and let them flesh it out. Some good examples are coming up in this article: "Corporate wikis breaking out all over: MSDN Wiki" by Dion Hinchcliffe. (He has another great post as well called "Exploiting the Power of Enterprise Wikis") Quote of the day: "Not leveraging the contributions of a company's most impassioned and enthusiastic customers is starting to be seen as a significand oversight in many business circles." It appears in the article that eBay is using Wikis to better communicate between their users, partners, and suppliers. Now MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) is using their pages to improve the quality of their developer documentation with the MSDN Wiki. THAT is a great usage. Your users often know your product better than your engineers and product managers because they have to live with it day to day. And guess what? If they tell the truth about some part of your product being broken - that's a GOOD thing.
  • Atlassian's Confluence is the best of them so far. Pros: the overall design is clean, it has advanced management tools, good security, and simple attachments. Its email function has to pick mail up from a POP box which makes it a little bit less ad-hoc but still functional. And most importantly, it also has great tools for moving pages around. Cons: Text editing, like with most apps these days is a bit dodgy, and pasting in blocks of text from Word is likely to cause problems. The pricing model is reasonable but for some reason (possibly because they're from Australia), they still don't have a directly hosted option so you have to use somebody like Contegix or deploy it on your own box. This seems to be a big and obvious oversight on their part these days. Also, their pricing model doesn't encourage small deployments right off the bat. I think this is the one that we'll use more of internally at the company where I work. Summary: The best of the enterprise wikis today, and one of the best options for scalability.
  • WetPaint is a newcomer that is doing some interesting stuff and that might be a better bet than JotSpot. Pros: The design is beautiful, the tool is very easy to use, the text editor is one of the best I have seen. Cons: I'm not clear on their entierprise suitability and it's not really their target market. It didn't appear that they had much in the way of administration tools, granular security, or any way to integrate into a back-end authentication system. Summary: I met one of the WetPaint guys at Gnomedex but he didn't seem to know the product very well. Hopefully next time, they'll put somebody more knowledgeable at their booth who knows the product in more detail. I think they're worth watching to see what they do in the next few months.
