50 Design Problems In 50 Days: Real Empathy For Innovation - 0 views

  •
I recently travelled 2517 miles to try to solve 50 problems in 50 days using design - a journey that would challenge me to fundamentally rethink my understanding of the user-experience design process. I set myself a challenge. I wanted to test the limits of design's ability to solve problems - big and small. To do this, I left the comfort of my computer chair and set out into the unknown. Each day, I had 24 hours to observe a problem, attempt to solve it and then communicate the solution.............read more

CSS & JS Auto-Refreshing with Live.js - 0 views

  •
I want to share a fantastic little tool that I've only recently come across; Live.js, written by Martin Kool. This JavaScript file automatically checks for changes to your CSS and JavaScript files, and refreshes them. That means you can have your text editor in one half of the screen, and a web browser in the other. When you save changes in the editor, the updates are reflected immediately in your browser. It really helps to speed up your development time. A lot of text editors offer HTML previews and such, but they only work for plain .html pages. The great thing about Live.js is that it works on any webpage, including a working WordPress theme...............(.read more.)

Multiple Background #CSS Animations - 0 views

  •
CSS background animation has been a hot topic for a long time, mostly because they look pretty sweet and don't require additional elements. I was recently asked if it was possible to have multiple background animations on a given element and the answer is yes...with concessions. Let's take a look at how it's done!

5 Ways to Use Email Pop Ups That Don't Suck - 0 views

  •
Many opinions lean towards hating pop ups for being intrusive, rude and a place to lose your soul (I joke, but see my recent tweet). There are however those who swear that pop up forms are super effective for increasing email signups (see Problogger's tweet). So maybe you're considering a pop up form on your site but are wary of how it will affect your visitors and rub them the wrong way. Thankfully there are ways to use pop up forms and still give visitors a great experience. Here are 5 things you can do that will boost conversion rates on email pop ups while not annoying your visitors.

25 Clean Web Designs for Inspiration - 0 views

  •
When it comes to the style of a website's design there are all kinds of options. Part of having an effect website involves having a design that helps to prioritize the right content and elements on the website, which results in users/visitors pay more attention to those important elements. One of the best ways to control the parts of the website that will get the most attention from visitors is to remove things that are unnecessary and might cause a distraction. In recent years the minimalist design approach has drawn a lot of attention, especially from designers who appreciate the beauty of simplicity. However, designing a website to avoid clutter and distractions doesn't mean that it has to be completely minimal with very few images and visual elements.

Become a Better, Faster Front-End Developer - 0 views

  •
So you're a pretty great web developer already. You've got some killer CSS chops (cross browser even), perhaps you've been a Photoshop expert for years, and you've got enough jQuery knowledge to make almost any chained animation go smoothly. But certainly you ask yourself, what's next? In fact, one of the most asked questions about web development is, "how do I stay on the leading edge?" Chris Coyier recently presented a fantastic talk on the subject, and there are sites fully dedicated to staying up to date on the latest web design news. Addy Osmani's roundup on becoming a better front-end engineer sets some great content out on the board for you to consider on the subject; needless to say, a lot of smart people are thinking about this very subject, so you're headed in the right direction.

How to Combine Typefaces - 0 views

  •
I recently finished reading Tim Brown's new book "Combining Typefaces." It's 63 pages. You can buy it for less than $5 on FiveSimpleSteps, as a pdf or epub. Combining Typefaces is a dense book. It goes through a lot of concepts very quickly, but I'm a fan of that. The book may be primarily about combining types, but I think it serves as a great introduction to typography as a whole. It goes over anatomy and general terminology, but the book primarily approaches typography as a form of artistic communication, instead of just a set of guidelines and formulas. This is important, because that means it accepts subjectivity. There is no one answer to type, no winning approach; all we have are the techniques and patterns observed and used by of artists and designers throughout centuries. It challenges you to think about typography in your own way: how will you create what you want to communicate? What will you use? How will you use it?

Remember Smalltalk? | Gartner Blogs 2008 - 1 views

  • 2) If you are BIG fan of dynamics languages (closures, meta programming, and all that cool stuff) then consider giving Smalltalk a look.  You might like what you see.  Its like Ruby but with bigger muscles.  You think Rails is cool? Check out seaside. In the end we’ll see a up tick in Smalltalk momentum over the next few years.
  • Please don’t talk about Smalltalk. I enjoy my competitive advantage over the Java/NET crowd
  • Where Smalltalk really shines recently is in field of web applications due to its dynamic nature (live upgrading, debugging etc.) and because its shortcoming are not relevant here.
  • ...9 more annotations...
  • On the Desktop - Dolphin creates 500k exe’s with ease - its a 1 button click (you just have to follow some of their easy put things in packages rules).
  • Remember LAN MAN? OS2? Both were heavily endorsed by Gartner.
  • I laugh when people say poor performance on older hardware was a mjor Smalltalk weakness. We routinely delivered applications that ran on 386 and 68020 processors with 8MB RAM. And yes, they were quite snappy. No, the reason Smalltalk didn’t catch on is because Sun spent more money on Java marketing than was spent on all computer languages combined, since the dawn of time.
  • I’ve listened personally to whiny ROR programmers groan and whine about PHP devs LEARNING ROR and undercutting them.
  • I didn’t fall for it for the marketing. I fell for WORA, for the language/runtime separation, for the multi-vendor approach (Sun never wanted to be the single provider for any Java centric product niche, and in fact was never the leader), for the comprehensive set of vendor-neutral APIs for all sorts of execution environments/applications,
  • For now I would like to see more use of Smalltalk like constructs in Java (Groovy).
  • Smalltalk must have sofisticated CASE tools, business process simulation tools, large development environments etc. etc. etc.
  • I stayed to teach Smalltalk since 1993 and am very happy about this information. Each academic year, we produce a small group of new Smalltalkers in the Czech Republic.
  • Joe Barnhart // Apr 4, 2009 at 2:48 pm At the company where I work, we have used Smalltalk for 19 years. Our tiny team of programmers has beat the pants off of competitors who employ teams 100 times our size.
