  • As some of you know, I am in the midst of a blog series on REST in WCF.  Further, I have been hard at work on a series of screencasts on the same subject (in conjunction with Ron Jacobs).  My colleague Tim Heuer relayed to me that I didn’t have a single post that we can point a person to that provides links to all of the posts and screencasts.  I will keep this post updated with all of the info:

Using C++ Interop (Implicit PInvoke) - 0 views

  • C++ Interop is recommended over explicit PInvoke because it provides better type safety, is typically less tedious to implement, is more forgiving if the unmanaged API is modified, and makes performance enhancements possible that are not possible with explicit PInvoke.
  • C++ Interop allows COM components to be accessed at will and does not require separate interop assemblies
  •
Because it is the language of the native APIs, Visual C++ has a special status on Windows which makes it  the best language for interacting with the platform APIs -- whether those are pure C++ APIs or COM components. This is partly due to the fact that unlike other .NET languages, Visual C++ allows managed and unmanaged code to exist in the same application and even in the same file ... allowing integration with existing apps and platform APIs that is just not possible in other .NET languages.

Making Strings More Secure - 0 views

  • Whidbey will be introducing a new class, SecureString, that helps to make this all easier for you. SecureStrings are held in encrypted memory by the CLR (using DPAPI), and are only unencrypted when they are accessed.  This limits the amount of time that your string is in plaintext for an attacker to see.  Since SecureString uses DPAPI to help secure your data, it's not available on Windows 98, ME, or Windows 2000 with anything less than service pack 3.
  •
The SecureString class provides a string type that is stored encrypted in memory when not in use and will not be copied around by the Garbage Collector, plus they can be zeroed out on destruction, and locked to read-only mode... Which makes this perfect for storing things like passwords in memory.

Managed Preview Handlers for Vista - 0 views

  •
A simple example of how to create a "Preview Handler" for Vista.  This would be a good first step for any Vista-enabled application that saves "documents" or has plugins: just give them their own file extension ... then you can hypothetically handle them this way to show in the file manager what each plugin does...

The 7 Software "-ilities" You Need To Know - 0 views

  • 1. Usability Software usability can be described as how effectively end users can use, learn, or control the system
  • 2. Maintainability ( or Flexibility / Testibility) The definition of maintainability [for me] implies how brittle the code is to change
  • 3. Scalability Scalability is the ability for your program to gracefully meet the demand of stress caused by increased usage
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • 4. Availability (or Reliability) How long the system is up and running and the Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) is known as the availability of a program
  • 5. Extensibility Are there points in the system where changes can be made with (or without) program changes?
  • 6. Security I shouldn’t need to go into this one but to be thorough I like this definition of security: the measure of system’s ability to resist unauthorized attempts at usage or behavior modification, while still providing service to legitimate users.
  • 7. Portability Portability is the ability for your application to run on numerous platforms.

Radiant CMS: Why Radiant? - 0 views

    • Kingdon Barrett

I was hoping to provide a list of my blog posts from RSS feeds, as well as links to all of the articles that I have commented on with my friends' blogs. I could list all of my friends' blogs and scrape them periodically, but I was hoping for a solution that uses trackbacks, or whatever pingback-style facilities are available on my friends' blogs. Granted this type of support will vary from site to site, but it should be possible to build a complete publishing record automatically, with the standards we have available today. I posted a comment on otierney.net (my friend Tristan is up on all the latest web standards) and I noticed that his blogger is collecting URLs along with emails. I filled in the link to my Radiant CMS on nerdland.org but I'm afraid my blogger is not going to do anything to collect these pingbacks, when they are fired. Can anyone point out an example code segment or project that highlights this type of behavior?
