Cancer develops when normal cells begin to divide uncontrollably. In some cases, these cancerous cells can spread to other tissues in the body. The onset of cancer involves genetic changes that cause abnormal growth and excessive multiplication of one or a few cells, eventually forming a mass known as a tumor.
