Microsoft's decision to retire its Windows and SQL Servers 2008 and 2008 R2 is not a sudden move. Mainstream support for Windows Server 2008/2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008/2008 R2 ended on January 13, 2015, and July 8, 2014, respectively.
