This is a good, in-depth read about how to effectively run classroom meetings in your own class. It talks about what classroom meetings promote amongst your students, some objectives you can address, ways to deal with challenging situations, and how to set it up for different age groups, and some questions you can use to start communication. If you're interested in implementing classroom meetings in your next practicum (or later on as a teacher), this document will give you everything you need to get started.

A lot of my looking around has resulted in seeing the book, "Reluctant Disciplinarian: Advice on Classroom Management from a Softy Who Became (Eventually) A Successful Teacher" by Gary Rubinstein. I have not had a chance to read the book, but this is a good review that highlights some key points. There don't seem to be any grounbreaking information, but I feel like it is nice to get classroom management advice from people that are currently teaching and going through what we will soon be. I really like the part on developing a teacher persona, as I think you need to have an identity that students understand and can know to expect.

In a time where we are seeing such an increase in diagnosis and a highly integrated classroom, it is important for teachers to be prepared to manage ASD behaviours within the classroom. This article provides instructional management strategies, ideas on how to prepare the student, comprehension strategies and ideas on preparing the student for transitional periods. A must read in todays classroom environment.

One teacher shares several accounts of dealing with difficult situations, sharing the effective and ineffective. There is a 'cheesy' video at the end - however, it is an interesting read and a good perspective from another teacher's experiences.

I wanted to find an article that gave a list of "best" strategies to use in managing students in the classroom. I came across this particular article by Kellie Hayden, a veteran teacher with 17 years of experience. She has taught subjects from mechanics to Shakespeare, middle to highschool, and students with ADHD to students with their own parole officers. Although this article represented one teachers view, she seems to have a great outlook and great classroom management. Here are her top 5: 5-keep the lesson moving 4-don't lecture for the whole period 3-talk to your students 2-stand near distruptive students 1-talk to extremely distruptive students in the hall (last resort is the office)

This video is the other part of the story (part two of the video posted under engaging students of today) on using technology to engage our students when we teach. As teachers we need to be life long learners and implementing technology is part of that. Using technology in the classroom will engage our students and hopefully result in fewer classroom disruptions that require management strategies!

This website gives you a glimpse into a great resource that I learnt about this week. The book is called The first Days of School and the website belongs to the creator of the book. This book is so great that the Waterloo Board provides one for their new teachers.

This classroom management success database has a ton of information! There are articles, quotes, tips, etc. that detail effective classroom management strategies etc. One of my favourites was, "If you go in with all guns blazing straight away, you're very soon going to run out of ammunition and the only thing you can do then is surrender." Check it out!

This site outlines one teacher's perspective on classroom management from four different approaches. Backing many of his strategies with real-life (and often really amusing) examples from his own career, he shows how the occasional use of some 'non-traditional' strategies work really well. After all, "all is fair when controlling 30 or 40 recalcitrant teenagers."

This short videa gives us as new teachers tips and reminders of what we need to think about when organizing our first classroom routines. It is a basic video but things as new teachers we may forget!

Although this video seems to be geared towards intermediate/senior teachers, it provides useful strategies that can be implemented at any grade level. I especially found strategies about teaching behaviour to improve academic success and consulting with colleagues about classroom management related issues very useful.

This article talks about some of the ways to hold students accountable for their own learning, as well as their behaviour in the classroom. I also found it helpful as it explains some of the factors that may lead to behavioural problems amongst students(i.e. overworking kids, too many outside of school responsibilities, etc...). Definitely an article worth checking out.

Here is a really cheesy song about five main classroom rules that I'm sure a lot of teacher would want in their classes. Although made with the best intensions I'm sure, it is (for lack of a better term) quite lame. When will teachers realize that kids can see right through this stuff? Instead of trying to water down our classroom rules, shouldn't we be making these rules explicit? While no one likes a stickler, students need to learn that certain rules are in place for certain reasons - not to hold people back, but to maintain mutual respect and to create a positive space. By throwing a lame video like this at them, you are settig yourself up to seem like the overseer intent on ruining everyone's childhood. Nevertheless the comments in the YouTube forum suggest many teachers are wanting to buy this song in MP3 format. I know if one of my teachers ever showed my class this, they'd be in for a long year...

Based on a literature review of publications on classroom management, 20 effective strategies were identified. These strategies were evaluated based on evidence based practices. A few strategies that seemed particularly helpful were 1. Maximize structure and predictability 2. Use a variety of ways to acknowledge appropriate behaviour 3. Use a variety of ways to acknowledge inappropriate behaviour

Icebreakers and games for the first day to help you get to know your class. This article also talks about the importance of letting your class get to know you. Idea number 2 is great about creating a web showing unity within the classroom.

Mutual Respect, The right to pass, No putdowns and attentive listening. All of these concepts are strategies for creating a positive classroom environment.
