Ebola Virus Cure: US Issues 'Task Order' For Ebola Drug ZMapp - 0 views

  •
"According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ZMapp has yet to be tested in humans for safety or effectiveness. ZMapp is not a vaccine, but a therapeutic drug for Ebola, so it cannot prevent infection. There are currently no FDA-approved vaccines or treatment products for Ebola. The standard treatment is merely supportive therapy, such as balancing the patients' fluids and electrolytes, maintaining their oxygen status and blood pressure, and treating them for any complicating infections."

Ebola: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment - 0 views

"There is no cure for Ebola, nor are there any vaccines that can prevent the disease. Those who recover from the disease do so through the strength of their own immune system, according to the CDC. Doctors have found that one of the most important treatments for patients afflicted with the virus is simply keeping them well hydrated and helping them breathe, to give their immune system a better chance to fight off the disease.  Doctors are trying several experimental treatments on patients. Some doctors are giving patients blood transfusions from those who have survived Ebola. The hope is that the survivor's antibodies will help the recipient's immune system fight off the virus. A 1995 study published in the Journal of Infectious Disease found that this treatment may be helpful to reduce the number of deaths from EDV.  ZMapp is one experimental treatment for Ebola."

  • Although the virus is rarely fatal, individuals who contract the virus "probably wish they would die" because it is so painful, says Robert Novak, a global health professor at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

  • Chikungunya first arrived in the Western hemisphere in December 2013.
  • he virus has spread to 17 countries or territories in the Caribbean, North American, and South America, and nearly 750,000 cases have been reported
  • has been linked to at least 14 deaths in the Caribbean, although those individuals likely had other health issues.
  • In July, two Florida residents became the first two American residents to domestically contract chikungunya.
  • As of Sept. 30, there have been nearly 1,200 imported cases from infected travelers arriving in the United States and 11 locally transmitted cases in Florida.

Treatment | Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever | CDC - 0 views

  • Experimental vaccines and treatments for Ebola are under development, but they have not yet been fully tested for safety or effectiveness.
  • No FDA-approved vaccine or medicine (e.g., antiviral drug) is available for Ebola.Symptoms of Ebola and complications are treated as they appear. The following basic interventions, when used early, can significantly improve the chances of survival:Providing intravenous fluids (IV) and balancing electrolytes (body salts).Maintaining oxygen status and blood pressure.Treating other infections if they occur.
  • Recovery from Ebola depends on good supportive care and the patient’s immune response. People who recover from Ebola infection develop antibodies that last for at least 10 years, possibly longer. It is not known if people who recover are immune for life or if they can become infected with a different species of Ebola. Some people who have recovered from Ebola have developed long-term complications, such as joint and vision problems.
