The Codes That Need to Be Broken - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
This article is basically about how women and men are regulated and judged by different standards in the workplace. Women and man naturally approach situations differently. The way women approach their bosses for promotions (shyly and not too pushy) or work excessive amounts of hours to feel like they deserve a promotion because they've developed more experience, is part of the reason why women are seen the way they are. Women try to build up from the top and are not as aggressive as men, whereas in society, with men all around us, we NEED TO BE AGGRESSIVE. We can deal with more responsibility, we don't always need to prove ourselves first! Men ask for extra responsibility and promotions right off the bat!

Setting the Pace with Toughness - 1 views

This article talks all about this successful Chinese woman named Ms. Dong, who worked her way up to riches from the bottom. I think that the women in our books and in our world today can learn from Ms. Dong in that, they have to be willing to not give up, have a drive within them, be responsible and not so easily able to compromise with others, stay strong in order to get what they should get! Favorite quotes: "Her attitude toward female success is simple: Women need to compete head-on with men." "You must be a thinker. Be decisive, have good judgment, organizational ability. Most importantly, you have to be able to take control," she said. "What kind of victory is it where you are given privileges, or where you play on your gender?"

This article doesn't specifically pertain to our question, but rather the way women are viewed in general and how that has stayed the same and changed throughout the years. Interesting article. I like that it's written as an easy read, with questions to the audience and short paragraphs, easy on the eyes and mind. :) Favorite quote: "In a way, Cleopatra embodies where we are today in regards to how we think about women, how we present women, how we package them, how we categorize them, how we treat them," Mr. Thompson went on. "She's such a modern figure because she was completely liberated and shattered any kind of ceiling glass."

talks about women in India and how there are some big successful ones, but others always face the glass ceiling in the workplace connection to A Thousand Splendid Suns and how men can get away with hurting women in their own homes because it's difficult to keep track of and prove it's optimistically written (which I like) and stresses that this generation of Indian women are fighting for EQUALITY IN the workplace not GETTING INTO the workplace.
