When Alec started our program at CHI, he would sit in a corner and seldom talk. He was extremely shy and insecure. The turning point came months later when he decided to participate in the annual talent show and performed in front of everyone.

The Center for Higher Independence, a division of Providence Place in San Antonio, TX continues to flourish. They will recognize the top students participating in the program, as they do every month, in an effort to show appreciation for the hard-working young men and women seeking an independent lifestyle as young adults.

Many prospective donors ask this question before making a donation to a non-profit organization, unsure of how their hard-earned money is actually going to be used. They want to help the Providence Place mission of providing adoption services and life-skills training to young adults with disabilities, but they also want to make sure their money is going into the right hands and is being used for the proper purposes.

All people with learning disabilities have the same rights to develop personal relationships and express their sexuality as everyone else. This includes the right to consent to sexual relationships including same sex relationships. These rights can only be denied on the basis of evidence of impaired capacity as defined by the Adults with Incapacity.

No one needs to watch the news every night, unless one is married to the anchor. No one dies proud that they spent their life keeping their house cleaner than anyone else in the family ... If your children grow up to become adults who spend this one precious life in a spin of multitasking, stress, and achievement, and then work out four times a week, will you be pleased that your kids also pursued this kind of whirlwind life? If you want more for your kids (lives well spent in hard work and savoring all that is lovely), why are you living in this manic way?

Divorce. Most people would be hard-pressed to think of a family who hasn't been scarred by this word. It's a word that doesn't escape us- from the youngest child to the aging parents having to watch their adult children's lives overturned by its whisper. Regardless of ages and stages, socio-economic class, race, religious belief, or sexual orientation, it is a word that typically leaves destruction in its wake. But, unlike so many other tragedies that plague us, it is one that can be avoided.
