Identification of young children at risk for Autism SpectrumDisorders (ASD) depends on early behavioral symptomatology and yetconventional criteria provide little guidance for use with infants andtoddlers. Recent research, however, has demonstrated that there are patternsof behavior below 2 years of age that distinguish children with autism fromthose who are developing typically or those with other developmentaldisabilities. Skill areas with particular promise for early identificationinclude social communication, sensory regulation, and play. This articlepreviews current innovative methodologies, presents a synthesis of recentresearch findings related to these three key areas, and provides clinicianswith practical guidelines for early identification of infants and toddlers atrisk for ASD and other disorders
