On 26 November 2006, lived one of the hardest blows reminiscent cycling. We are in the penultimate round of the Six Days of Ghent, in the Flemish city Velodrome . Pure entertainment for all cycling enthusiasts. Suddenly, an oversight, and a small chance ending blow with everything. Isaac Gálvez , born in Vilanova 31 years ago and world champion in track, madison, teaming with Joan Llaneras , received a light touch that made him lose control of his bike. He went to the ground at a speed of about 50 kilometers per hour, rammed it with a railing , which caused his broken ribs , he reached the heart . En route to the hospital, he stopped breathing .

It was a hard blow for cycling, but even more for the person who still had inadvertently caused his downfall. "How can I overcome this? Emotionally I'm a wreck ," said De Fauw shortly after. I would not beat . You would end up committing suicide

Dimitri de Fauw was born in Ghent , Belgium, July 13, 1981 . His life was cycling. From teeny had formed both on the road and on the track , in a country of more than enough bike tradition .cycling monton In 2004 , only 23 years, he reached the opportunity to turn professional , signing for the Quick Step. In 2006 , his career was clearly upline . He was called to do important things in track, where he had already won several victories, and on the road . But within seconds , everything changed.

From the moment he was hit , he knew it was not going to end well . Soon after, the tragedy was confirmed. The race was suspended , was located to the public to leave the velodrome , and the final day was canceled . But none of that mattered to De Fauw . At its head was just the slightest touch had caused the fall of Gálvez . The slightest touch had caused his death.

" Emotionally I'm a wreck. Everyone talks of an accident , but the consequences are dramatic and my name goes everywhere ," admitted the Belgian tomorrow. She was sunk. Soon after, the message was worsening . " How can I overcome this? I'll charge me for the rest of my life. Hopefully the weather can soften the wounds ."

"It was a fall, as many hundreds that occur throughout the year ," said Joan Llaneras , best Spanish track cyclist in history, and always a couple of Isaac Gálvez . Then there was that night in Ghent. The criminal investigation concluded that it could not consider anyone responsible for the accident , as something that it was "involuntary ." No one could blame him. But himself . So he went into depression.

Since then, Dimitri de Fauw was never the same . So say all cyclists around him. I kept pedaling , but his head was not there. He was always elsewhere. At the velodrome in Ghent. "We all knew he was in trouble , so we all set out to help . 's Rule was that whenever we were with him we should encourage him, let him not be isolated in their guilt .  cycling T-shirts Myself I said several times that he had not had any fault ... " Joan Llaneras commented .

De Fauw abandoned for a while cycling. I wanted to try to disconnect everything. At least one season. But he was unable . It did not last too long. Shortly after returning to riding, but well below their level. Still, was gradually taking flight , and returned to the slopes, to major competitions. In late October 2009 he played the Six Days of Grenoble . It was to be his last race .

After defeating the test, he returned home with his friend and teammate Iljo Keisse . " We came home with Gianni Meersman . I left Dimitri at your door , and we were still laughing at how well he had spent in Grenoble . We said goodbye , and did not find it different from other times . 'll Call you to go training , he told me . " But it was not going to get that call .

On the morning of November 6 , Dimitri de Fauw was found dead in his home. With no clear sign of violence. There was no note . There was no message. It did not . Everyone knew what had happened. That fateful night of November 26, 2006 , Ghent Velodrome had claimed two victims. Isaac Gálvez , in minutes , and Dimitri de Fauw , in a long and painful journey of almost three years.
