Lure of the Labyrinth is a digital game for middle-school pre-algebra students. It includes a wealth of intriguing math-based puzzles wrapped into an exciting narrative game in which students work to find their lost pet - and save the world from monsters! Linked to both national and state mathematics standards, the game gives students a chance to actually think like mathematicians. I worked on some of the puzzles, and I'm sure this would extend to high school age students as well! Also, students don't have to play the full game. You can choose a puzzle that correlates to what you're teaching and just do that puzzle.
Math by Design (MbD) gives students a highly creative experience in seeing geometry and measurement come alive. Under Educator Resources, check out some of the Math In Action videos! I loved the one on cake decorating.
Bayville was developed for middle school students studying life sciences, ecology, and the environment.

From Mara Linaberger: Great discussion on the iPad everyone! Next Friday we will be launching an iPad pilot with 48 art, music and theatre teachers at IU1 as part of our ArtsEducator 2.0 project. You can read about our inquiry and preparation done this summer to get some practice in, and to think through some of the logistics these folks might face this fall with their own pad here: http://artsedtech.wordpress.com/
Our thinking was to have the teachers use the iPad as a personal tool first, then move to them as a tool for instruction. The logical step for some may be to then take the tool into student use while others may stick to it as an instructional tool. We'll be documenting our project online here.
Interesting video about the "21st Century teacher" What's nice about this video is that it's VERY easy to do. A script, some posterboards and markers, some easy filming, and editing, and some background music. No special effects. Your STUDENTS can do this, too!

Stop Disasters is a collection of disaster simulation games created by the ISDR (International Strategy for Disaster Reduction). As students play the games, they learn about natural disasters and actions that people can take to help protect themselves and others. The student's job is to plan and construct a safer environment for their population. Students must assess the disaster risk and try to limit damage when natural disasters strike. Some advice that students are given within the game will be good and Some of it will be bad, it is up to them to discern which is which. Students can choose from 5 different scenarios, Tsunami, Earthquake, Hurricane, Wild Fire, and Flood. Each scenario has 3 levels: easy, medium, and hard. When students enter the simulation, they are greeted by a local who briefs them on the situation. Students are given a budget and time limit to complete the necessary precautions. After 20 min., the natural disaster occurs and tests their solutions. Students develop the land and learn about their choices each step of the way. During the game students can keep track of their budget, the population they are working to keep safe, a map and risk management map, and their remaining time. The game is very engaging, it reminds me of the SIM City games that I played as a kid. This game will put those critical thinking muscles to the test!
Word Games is a provider of a large collection of online word games and typing games. The word games range from simple word searches and crosswords to games that require players to complete sentences and phrases. The typing games are a mix of simple sentence typing for speed and games that require accuracy to "defend" a character or move a character through a scene.
Some of the games featured on Word Games can be either downloaded to your computer, see Typing Defense, or can be embedded into your blog or website. Word Games does use interstitial ads on its site, which is might annoy Some visitors, but none of the ads I've seen on it were inappropriate in their content (most were for online schools, and tutoring services). The size of the Word Games collection makes up for the potential annoyance of interstitial ads.

I think that if we're really going to progress in transforming traditional institutions of public education into systems capable of enabling technology-facilitated student-centered learning, then we need to gain a better understanding of exactly what's been holding us back all along.

Google Web Search - Classroom Lessons and Resources
Web search can be a remarkable research tool for students - and we've heard from educators that they could use some help to teach better search skills in their classroom.
The following Search Education lessons were developed by Google Certified Teachers to help you do just that. The lessons are short, modular and not specific to any discipline so you can mix and match to what best fits the needs of your classroom. Additionally, all lessons come with a companion set of slides (and some with additional resources) to help you guide your in-class discussions.

The Reflective Principal: A Taxonomy of Reflection (Part
IV)
Reflection can be a challenging endeavor. It's not something that's fostered in
school - typically someone else tells you how you're doing! Principals (and
instructional leaders) are often so caught up in the meeting the demands of the
day, that they rarely have the luxury to muse on how things went.
Self-assessment is clouded by the need to meet
competing demands from
multiple stakeholders.
In an effort to help schools become more reflective learning environments,
I've developed this "Taxonomy of Reflection" - modeled on Bloom's approach.
It's posted in four installments:
1.
A
Taxonomy of
Reflection
2.
The
Reflective Student
3.
The
Reflective Teacher
4. The Reflective
Principal
It's very much a work in progress, and I invite your comments and
suggestions. I'm especially interested in whether you think the parallel
construction to Bloom holds up through each of the three examples - student,
teacher, and principal. I think we have something to learn from each
perspective.
4. The Reflective Principal
Each level of reflection is structured to parallel Bloom's taxonomy.
(See
installment 1 for more on the model)
Assume that a principal (or
instructional leader) looked back on an initiative (or program, decision,
project, etc) they have just implemented. What sample questions might they ask
themselves as they move from lower to higher order reflection? (Note: I'm not
suggesting that all questions are asked after every initiative - feel free to
pick a few that work for you.)
Bloom's Remembering
: What did I do?
Principal
Reflection:
What role did I play in implementing this program? What
role did others play? What steps did I take? Is the program now operational and
being implemented? Was it completed on time? Are assessment measures in
place?

Math is one of the easiest subjects to use well on an interactive whiteboard. The Internet is awash with SMART Board Math games, but not all are worth your time. The ones in this article have been tried and tested in my classroom, and are long standing favorites with my students. Some are Internet based, and Some are SMART Notebook files for you to download, but all are great fun and will help bring added engagement to your Math lessons. The majority of these SMART Board Math games can be used in a K-6 environment, but many can be used beyond that.
