Web 2.0 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

shared by Mike Leonard on 25 Mar 08 - Cached
  • Web 2.0 is a trend in World Wide Web technology, and web design, a second generation of web-based communities and hosted services such as social-networking sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies, which aim to facilitate creativity, information sharing, collaboration, and sharing among users. It is almost defined as the new era of the World Wide Web. The term became notable after the first O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004.[2][3] Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but to changes in the ways software developers and end-users use webs. According to Tim O'Reilly: “ Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the Internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform.[4] ” Some technology experts, notably Tim Berners-Lee, have questioned whether one can use the term in a meaningful way, since many of the technology components of "Web 2.0" have existed since the early days of the Web.[5][6]

2009 Horizon Report: The K12 Edition » Critical Challenges - 0 views

  • Students and teachers both are finding it necessary to be technologically adept, to be able to collaborate on a global scale and to understand content and media design.
  • Schools need to adapt to current student needs and identify new learning models that are engaging to younger generations.
  • To support such a change, both teaching practice and the tools used in the classroom must adapt. Assessment has also not kept pace with new modes of working, and must change along with teaching methods, tools, and materials.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Use of technology tools that are already familiar to students, project-based learning practices that incorporate real-life experiences, and mentoring from community members are a few practices that support increased engagement.
  • Technology tools that are part of everyday life for many students and working professionals should be seen as core tools of the teaching profession that teachers are required to master as any professional would master the tools of his or her trade.
  • Learners have increasing opportunities to take their education into their own hands, and options like informal education, online education, and home-based learning are attracting students away from traditional educational settings. If the system is to remain relevant it must adapt, but major change comes hard in education.

Eigth habits of highly effective 21st century teachers - 0 views

  • We expect our students to be life-long learners. Teachers, must continue to absorb experiences and knowledge, as well. We must endeavour to stay current. I wonder how many people are still using their lesson and unit plans from five years ago. To be a teacher, you must learn and adapt as the horizons and landscapes change.

Teachers need to be encouraged to showcase their love of learning. If not lifelong learners, how can teachers expect students to love learning?

Interactives . Spelling Bee . Intro - 0 views

  •
This set of activities is like an old-fashioned Spelling Bee. Contestants -- that's you! -- in grades 1-8 will listen to three stories, one at a time, and then spell words from each story. Students in high school will listen to separate sentences and then spell the words from each sentence. If you get stumped, you can click to hear a word again, as many times as you need to. If you're in grade three or higher, you can ask for a definition too. Since words often make more sense when they are attached to an idea, all the words in the story or sentences are in context. Review the words, hear the audio, and SPELL the missing words. Make sure to check your SPELLING carefully, since your results will be calculated at the end.

More Schools Embrace the iPad as a Learning Tool - NYTimes.com - 3 views

  • less costly options, like smartphones

Oh.. there y' go. A smart phone can do even LESS than the ipad. Show me how a smartphone supports your curriculum moreso than a laptop.
  • paying for their iPads through federal and other grants,
    • anonymous

Doesn't ANYONE question the wisdom of this?
  • “You can do everything that the iPad can with existing off-the-shelf technology and hardware for probably $300 to $400 less per device,
    • anonymous

Agreed. But it's NOT the smartphone
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • About 5,400 educational applications are available specifically for the iPad, of which nearly 1,000 can be downloaded free.
    • anonymous

I wonder how many applications are available on the web - for FREE?
  • “It has brought individual technology into the classroom without changing the classroom atmosphere,”
    • anonymous

OK - THis one is beyond screams. It makes me ANGRY!! Can you believe this? And this guy probably gets paid more than you do!
  • “It’s not about a cool application,” Dr. Brenner said. “We are talking about changing the way we do business in the classroom.”

Not according to Mr Curtis., He want this because it WON'T change what you're doing in the classroom. This is just SO absurd to me.

More Schools Embrace the iPad as a Learning Tool - NYTimes.com - 1 views

  • teach Kafka in multimedia, history through “Jeopardy”-like games and math with step-by-step animation of complex problems.
    • anonymous

Finally! We couldn't do that before. And we all KNOW the higher order thinking that goges on in Jeopardy games. Ugh!
  • The iPads cost $750 apiece
    • anonymous

$750 EACH? They couldn't get a laptop for that? One that could do all that this ipad can do AND MORE??
  • Educators, for instance, are still divided over whether initiatives to give every student a laptop have made a difference academically.
    • anonymous

And the reason is that we buy toys and only allow our students to do what they always did before, yet we expect different results. Notice what they say these kids will use these ipads for. Revolutionary? Hardly. Sound education? Not even close.
  • ...8 more annotations...
  • “IPads are marvelous tools to engage kids, but then the novelty wears off and you get into hard-core issues of teaching and learning.”
    • anonymous

Exactly! When they see that they can't add apps or use it as a personal learning deice (locked down, it's still learning that's direted by the teacher and not by the student) the novelty will wear off VERY quickly.
  • $56,250 for the initial 75
    • anonymous

How many regular laptops could they have bought for that amount? Machines that can do all the ipad can do AND MORE!
  • 32-gigabyte, with case and stylus
    • anonymous

They need 32 gig? I'll be willing to be they don't fill HALF of that. NO music. NO photos. Just apps? This decision was made by someone who thought more is better. Oh, and.. stylus? HUH?
  • play math games, study world maps and read “Winnie the Pooh.”
    • anonymous

Did you hear me screaming on this one? OH BOY! They can read Winnie the Pooh! And finally study world maps. And THEN what?
  • “I think this could very well be the biggest thing to hit school technology since the overhead projector,
    • anonymous

And we know how much the overhead projector raises the level of Bloom's and fosters student-centered environments. It allows the TEACHERS to do things. Not the students.
  • The New York City public schools have ordered more than 2,000 iPads, for $1.3 million
    • anonymous

      AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHUUUUUGGGGHGHHHHHH!!!
  • More than 200 Chicago public schools applied for 23 district-financed iPad grants totaling $450,000. The Virginia Department of Education is overseeing a $150,000 iPad initiative

Economic recession? WHAT economic recession? Oh my. I hope that folks revisit these 'investments' in two years. There will be NO improvement and they will again blame the technology instead of the fact that it was the WRONG technology!
  • “If there isn’t an app that does something I need, there will be sooner or later,”
    • anonymous

Yes, but students won't be able to install it.

Will the Real Digital Native Please Stand Up? -- Campus Technology - 1 views

  • "It is how they perceive [the web] that makes them different in my opinion," he explains. "Many older people use the web, of course, but for digital natives the web is an integral part of their lives. They go there first, instinctively. And yes, some are better at it than others. I definitely agree that there is a continuum of capabilities among the digital natives. But if we are talking about what makes them different from previous generations, I believe it is this connection to the web."
    • anonymous

If the difference is in whether or not they go to the web 'instinctively' then I think this guy just disproved his own point. MOST of us to to the web instinctively.'
  • She says this group of learners is more globally aware, thanks to the internet, and more adept at collaborative uses of the web.
    • anonymous

And this definition has NOTHING to do with age.
  • "This generation definitely has a thematic approach to learning," she says, "which is not about, 'I'm a vessel--go ahead and fill me up.' It's about, 'I'm the master of my own educational destiny. Give me lots of input and I'll find what I think is most important.' Most of the [K-12] schools I talk to still believe that they are the custodians of knowledge. But for these kids, increasingly, [schools] are just one more source of input."
    • anonymous

I LOVE this discussion. What do you think?
    • Michelle Krill

I think this is true. The educator has to teach the students how to know which information is important and how to make connections between what they know and what they are learning.

  • While Prensky's original definition might not survive close scrutiny a decade later--too generationally focused and without enough attention on how students use their devices--he was definitely on to something.

      Ah, there it is.

Will the Real Digital Native Please Stand Up? -- Campus Technology - 0 views

  • The problem with Prensky's assumption is that it's based on age--on the idea that, because you were born in a certain era, you must be a certain way
    • anonymous

      Amen to THAT!! :)
  • Another flaw in the eyes of some educators is the fact that Prensky labels everyone else as "digital immigrants," unable to achieve true fluency in the new tech world
    • anonymous

Unable to achieve true fluency. BUNK! How many coaches did we have over the age of 50? (Who would admit it, that is.) :)

I'd LOVE to have a discussion on this article

Will the Real Digital Native Please Stand Up? -- Campus Technology - 1 views

  • "I don't think the term was ever valid, or even very useful," she says. "It assumes that older people are worse than younger people when it comes to technology. And it seems to assume that all young people are homogenous when it comes to technology use. Neither of those things is correct."
    • anonymous

What do you think of this? If you agree, did the original terms serve their purpose - in 2001?
  • "My work has shown over the years that there are, in fact, significant differences among people of the same age when it comes to the skill with which they use digital media--and that age is not necessarily a determinant of skill,"
    • anonymous

I think you coaches display a LOT more of the characteristics of a Digital Native than many of your students. Agree? Disagree?
