Understanding Alcohol: Investigations into Biology and Behavior-developed with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)-is a creative, inquiry-based instruction program designed to promote active learning and stimulate student interest in medical topics. This curriculum supplement aims to help students develop the following major goals associated with scientific literacy: to experience the process of scientific inquiry and develop an enhanced understanding of the nature and methods of science; andto appreciate the role of science in society and the relationship between basic science and human health.

From Mara Linaberger: Great discussion on the iPad everyone! Next Friday we will be launching an iPad pilot with 48 art, music and theatre teachers at IU1 as part of our ArtsEducator 2.0 project. You can read about our inquiry and preparation done this summer to get some practice in, and to think through some of the logistics these folks might face this fall with their own pad here: http://artsedtech.wordpress.com/ Our thinking was to have the teachers use the iPad as a personal tool first, then move to them as a tool for instruction. The logical step for some may be to then take the tool into student use while others may stick to it as an instructional tool. We'll be documenting our project online here.

how do you use the Google search box to get just the right amount of information, analyze it for authenticity, and get it quickly? The new Google Search Lessons are aimed at helping teachers and students learn the inside scoop about skillful searching. Check out nine compelling and practical lessons for students to understand and be successful with the Google search process. The lessons are divided into three modules; Understanding Search Engines, Search Techniques and Strategies, and Search Features. Each topic contains three lessons that build on the skills taught in the previous lesson. Teachers can mix and match lessons depending on the skills they want to emphasize. Students at SLA are assessed through a variety of means with a focus on project-based learning and our five core values of inquiry, research, collaboration, presentation, and reflection. Our students do not take the School District of Philadelphia benchmark exams; rather, they complete projects in every subject that are assessed based on the SLA rubric (see below). From IU 1 Mara Linaberger says: At IU1 we do an induction workshop for year 2 teachers on Google Tools - its called "Growing with Google" (we keep adding new tools to the choices as we go and as they become available). Its run as small group inquiry and has web links out for each of the tools for teachers to self-train on the tools they choose. It is loosely a "web quest" - although there aren't specific questions to be answered, because the teachers identify their own questions/needs and take their learning from there.
