Am I the only one who enjoys reading local coverage of the Common Core transition? Maybe so, but I find it fascinating to read the take of local organizations such as the Morris Daily Herald when it comes to the CCSS. There are some interesting anecdotes, and possibly some great ideas, contained within this article. Check it out.

In this great post, the author shares ideas from a webinar produced by an education department in Maine. It includes some great ideas about integrating social media, and ties it to the common core. Twitter, blogs, and more!

The idea of doing "real world" problems in math class is not a new one. But, as this post from an excellent math blog (with a great name) explains, maybe the shift to the Common Core will help make this idea more of a reality, instead of just something teachers say they want to do.

All of these ideas here are tied to the units created by the folks at commoncore.org (which is NOT the official CCSS website...corestandards.org). However, even if you're not using their curriculum, this offers some interesting ideas about how to integrate art in a more in-depth, standards-based manner.

These are the sorts of things teachers need to really get moving on CCSS implementation. Without an idea of what the assessments will look like, it's challenging to shift your teaching. Hopefully we'll see more things like this come out of the assessment consortia.

Some examples and resources. Definitely need to explore this for ideas for CCSS mathematics.

Twitter can be a great resource for educators working on the Common Core. This article reviews a recent #teaching2030 chat (an awesome chat to follow). The topic was the CCSS. Using social media to connect and collaborate as we move forward toward full implementation is a great idea. Please follow and use the #CCchat hashtag for even more Common Core resources.

Dave (@davestuartjr on twitter) has a great blog that we've featured here before. This activity suggestion could be adapted for a wide range of grades, and it definitely puts the idea of argument in the spotlight from day one.

I really like the approach of breaking down the process of creating book trailers into steps, and noting how each step aligns with the CCSS. This post offers a gold mine of ideas for going beyond trailer creation, too.

There are some brilliant Common Core related ideas out there. This is one of them! Tying project based learning and global projects to the CCSS really demonstrates the powerful shifts that the new standards can bring about. This video is worth the watch.

I am, you could say, a Common Core advocate. I'm in favor of the standards...but the reason I'm in favor of them is because I see them as an opportunity to shift the way we teach. There are, however, other things to consider, so I like to make sure I read as much as I can about the opposing point of view, that the standards are NOT a good idea. This article certainly makes a compelling case and is worth the read.

Grant Wiggins is able to express so many topics in a way that makes total sense. Here he writes about the idea of national standards and how they still are too "one-size-fits-all" for his tastes. I would definitely agree.

Solid database of math sample CCSS performance tasks for grades 2-8. Teachers need more of these in their classrooms. This is a great place to get ideas.
