An AirDog II DF-165, 165 GPM unit was chosen to supply copious amounts of fuel to the built common rail. Because of the engine swap, Kurtis had to decide whether to adapt a Ford kit to the Cummins or vice versa. It looked easier to fit a Cummins kit than adapting a Ford kit, especially since a certain amount of plumbing changes had already been made to the Ford on the suction side.

The most common questions revolve around whether to adapt the Cummins to the Ford transmission or swap in the Dodge trans with the engine. It's done both ways, but many people think that the various Dodge truck automatics can't match the Ford 4R100 and 5R110 for beef-stock or modified.

David Bradley is a diesel conversion specialist out of Montana, so it makes sense for him to have a truck with a conversion in it. His King Ranch Ford sports a 2003 common rail 5.9 Cummins engine. David says that this engine provides him more reliability, power and MPG than any of the Ford motor options. Hey, Ford fans, he likes the body and frame better on the Fords.

In the case of this 2007.5 6.7L Dodge Cummins, owned by Nick Child of Price, Utah, who just happens to be a mechanical engineering student at the University of Utah, it's been built with those three main principles in mind.

There comes a time in every modified common rail diesel's life when the stock high-pressure pump can't keep up with the fuel pressure needed from higher fuel demand. This is what happened with the 6.7L Cummins in our '02 F-350 swap truck.

Originally the build started with the purchase of a raw '81 Chevy 1-ton chassis, and then the father and son team went to work restoring and rebuilding the truck from the ground up. Like the engine, the suspension has gone through many revisions before landing at the current combination of lift and wheels/tires. It has ranged from a 4-inch lift running 33-inch tires all the way up to 12 inches of lift with 39-inch Boggers.

This 1981 Chevrolet K30 1-ton pickup is a great example of a well-built father and son project that Bryce Schopmeyer and his father, Roger, completed over a three-year build. The Schopmeyers did most of the work themselves in their barn in Bowling Green, Indiana, leaning on expert help with the paint and bodywork as well as diesel performance.

Owners of the Ram truck with the ISB 6.7L Cummins engine have been blessed with a factory exhaust brake from the beginning. This exhaust brake uses the variable geometry turbo on these engines to increase back pressure and thus improve engine braking, when the OEM unit is engaged.
