The SENSEX was first formed on 1-1-1986 and used the market capitalization of the 30 most traded stocks of BSE. The base was 1979 and taken as 100. The 30 scrips of 1986 and no more the same - some have been removed while some have been added. At irregular intervals, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) authorities review and modify its composition to make sure it reflects current market conditions.

BSE Sensex rallied as many as 217 points in intraday trade, but pared most of the gains in last hour of trade to close at 25,868, up 0.10 per cent, or 27 points. The 50-stock barometer Nifty 50 earned 14 pts, or 0.18 per-cent, at 7,856. Top gainers includes Gail and Wipro on the BSE benchmark.

Today, Nifty 50 was at 7,746, went down 78 pts or 1 per-cent. It reached a high of 7,764.55 & a low of 7,741.20 in the first 30 mins of trade. While the 30-share index was trading at 25,619, down 247 pts or 0.96 per-cent. It reached a high of 25,724.09 and a low of 25,590.96 in morning trade.

Bank nifty futures tips & updates for today, the S&P BSE Sensex surged more than 100 pts in morning trade, led by gains in HDFC, ICICI Bank,Tata Motors, L&T, Sun Pharma, and RIL.

Market updates : The Sensex was trading at 25,681, went down 204 pts or 0.79 per-cent. It attained a high of 26,810.06 and a low of 25,644.35 in early morning trade. The Nifty50 was at 7,801, went down 62 pts or 0.80 per-cent. It attained a high of 7,819.25 & a low of 7,787.70 in the first 30 mins of trade.
