In an efficient and safe effort to save us from the ill-effects of plastic waste, Akinori Ito has developed a machine which converts plastic back into oil. The machine produced in various sizes, for both industrial and home uses, can easily transform a kilogram of plastic waste into a liter of oil, using about 1 kW·h of electricity but without emitting CO2 in the process. The machine uses a temperature controlling electric heater instead of flames, processing anything from polyethylene or polystyrene to polypropylene (numbers 2-4). Comment: 1 kg of plastic produces one liter of oil, which costs $1.50. This process uses only about 1 kW·h of electricity, which costs less than 20 cents!

The Great American Aero Derby (GAAD) is a competition designed to introduce students between the ages of 10 and 18 years to the exciting world of aviation. The competition is split into two categories based upon age. Scholarships and prizes will be awarded to students whose planes remain aloft the longest.

Participants receive ground training in our campus facilities, fly in our new C-172 Simulator, and pilot a C-172S aircraft. The university has several programs aimed at reaching younger girls, including after-school aerospace and robotics clubs at about eight area elementary and middle schools. A couple of the clubs are all-female.

In the 1980s, Nicole P. Stott was a student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach. Last year, however, she got to see Florida from a very different perspective -- from orbit.

"The general idea is like a workshop," said Luke. "We've gotten rid of tutorials and the labs and now students have a two-hour practical session every week." Each of the new spaces has nine work tables called pods that bring students together in groups of four. Pilots at Renton Municipal Airport in Washington state took 170 women and girls on introductory flights Dec. 5, and the airport is now recognized by the Centennial of Licensed Women Pilots for introducing the most girls and women to flying in one day.

The technique is called high dynamic range and involves blending up to nine different exposures of the subject. This wide range of exposures allows the final image to come closer to the extreme range between light and dark that the human eye can see.
